Why is my cat not eating, can't open mouth, has bad breath & red gums?

I am sorry to hear that Sweety has a painful mouth. Unfortunately, gingivitis/stomatitis in cats can be very severe and quite debilitating. It can be made even worse in cats that have other immune issues, such as allergies or FeLV/FIV infections. Antibiotics and immune-suppressive medications can be used in mild cases. Thorough dental cleaning will help many of these cases more than just medical treatment. However, many cats will need all or most of their teeth pulled to ease the pain. The pain and inflammation is caused by an immune reaction to the tartar. Since we can't completely prevent tartar build up on the teeth, often removing the teeth is our only option. Obviously this is quite a bit more expensive than a simple teeth cleaning. I recommend discussing your options with the veterinarian that has treated Sweety as far as medications or financing for the dental cleaning. Hello. I am concerned that Snowball may have some issues with the tissues deeper in his mouth. There is a condition called stomatitis, which can cause bleeding, inflammation & significant pain. Your cat will be reluctant to eat as it hurts to swallow. Your veterinarian can discover the cause of the blood & hopefully make some recommendations for treating Snowball & hopefully get him feeling better soon. This condition can be caused by a condition that causes the tooth roots to be resorbed by the body, or a build up of bacteria and tartar around the gum line. This results in chronic infections an inflammation, which can be very painful and even result in Nero not wanting to eat. I recommend having Nero looked at by a vet as soon as possible to determine the cause of this condition and begin the appropriate treatment. He may need to have some of the teeth removed under general anesthesia. I hope this helps and that Nero gets better soon!

Cat influenza is pretty rare, and your vet may have been referring to one of the more common viral diseases of cats that affects the upper respiratory tract and/or eyes, such as chylamidia, calicivirus, or herpes. Often these viral infections will produce secondary bacterial infections that respond to antibiotics, so this would definitely be indicated if it hasn't been tried. These viruses can also produce a condition in the mouth known as stomatitis, or severe inflammation of the gums and oral cavity, which often causes bad breath. Many times these cats need to have many teeth extracted in order to bring the condition into remission. I'd recommend seeing a specialist, or another vet who is familiar with these conditions and able to reach a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. I would also recommend testing your cat for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, as these diseases can make cats more susceptible to other problems.

Without examining your cat or at least seeing some photos it is very difficult for me to comment. The best I can tell you is that he needs to see a vet so he can be examined in person. He may have a seriously infected tooth or even a tumor in his mouth cavity. Both things can cause the sign you describe. He cannot be left in this condition without eating and losing weight. It sounds like he is in pain so he needs to see a vet right away. I would not wait to get him examined. This is an emergency in my opinion.

I am sorry Christian is having a painful mouth. Honestly, I would recommend taking Christian to a vet for a good physical exam. Severe dental and gum disease usually needs treated with antibiotics , pain medications and possible extraction of the bad teeth. At home I would avoid trying to brush or examine Christians mouth often because it is a painful disease. I hope that helps

I would say from your pictures that Jax's gum is quite swollen and I imagine it's very painful to him. It could be that his tooth has broken off and is rotten causing the swelling and bad breath. It could also be he has a tooth root abscess. This is definitely something that needs to be treated sooner rather than later, so please call your vet to get him an appointment asap to have this treated. I would soak his dry food in warm water or gently warmed chicken broth to make his food softer to eat, or you can give him canned food for now. Best of luck, I hope this helps.
