Why is my cat's breath bad and he keeps sticking his tongue out?

He may have an injury or something stuck in his mouth that makes him painful and reluctant to eat. I strongly recommend getting him seen by a vet right away, even though he's feeling better. There may still be something that can be corrected to make him feel better, and if he has swallowed something he shouldn't have or injured his mouth by chewing something he may need veterinary care in order to heal completely.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the pictures you provided, Popcorn's teeth on that side do not look that diseased. There may be an infected tooth somewhere in the mouth that is causing the odor. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may be in need of a dental cleaning under anesthesia to help determine what the cause of the bad breath could be. There may just be bacteria in the mouth, not necessarily an infection. Halitosis (bad breath) in a kitten can be caused by oral infections such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) or feline stomatitis (inflammation of the oral mucous membranes at the back of the mouth). Teething can also cause bad breath. Another cause that is harmless is certain food like canned soft food can sometimes cause the kitten bad breath, for example, smoked oysters or canned tuna. Other causes such as kidney/liver disease and diabetes are less commonly found in kittens. I would suggest to take the kitten to your vet to examine the mouth and identify the cause.

Hi. It sounds like Oliver has some severe dental disease. He most likely has gingivitis and possibly a painful, loose, or resorptive lesions on some teeth. Dental disease in cats can cause pain and discomfort.  This could impact quality of life. In some cases, the dental disease can cause a cat to stop eating. For dental disease, besides brushing teeth with pet toothpaste daily,  your veterinarian will recommend removing plaque and mineral buildup by scaling and polishing the teeth. Teeth will try to be saved wherever possible. In extreme cases, extraction of teeth might be needed.  Unfortunately a veterinarian will need to be involved. If she will allow you to look in the mouth, you may also notice tartar on the teeth as well as gingivitis (red inflamed gums). This will need to be evaluated and treated by her veterinarian. However, if she is eating, drinking and acting normal, then it is not likely an emergency. When restrictions in your country let up, you can seek care for her. I hope this information helps!

Bad breath in cats is usually a sign of either an oral disease or kidney failure, i would strongly recommend taking Tabu to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, if her oral cavity does not seem to be the problem a blood test will need to be done to confirm or rule out kidney failure.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bad breath could be a sign of a bad tooth. Smelling like fish could be Iayl licking his anal glands (sacs inside the rectum). If these glands get full or infected, cats will lick the area. I recommend taking Iayl to the vet for an exam of his mouth and anal glands. He may need to have a dental cleaning or have the glands expressed. Good luck!
