My cat has fluid under skin & hair loss but seems fine. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

I think My cat was attacked by a dog, she has no bite marks but has lost a fair chunk of hair on her back near her tail, there is also fluid under the skin! She doesn’t seem bothered at all and doesn’t care when I pat over the spot

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A dog bite would almost always leave puncture wounds but perhaps a cat bite, another trauma (landed wrong, etc).

In case it is a big abscess, I’d strongly recommend you see the vet as soon as possible. It will need to be lanced, drained, and flushed and Lady will need some antibiotics.

It’s likely not an urgent emergency but the first available appointment tomorrow would be good.

Best wishes to you and Lady!
