My cat has a painful, oozing leg injury. Is it an abscess or bite?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

My lovely cat has what appears to be an abscess or puncture mark on her hind leg. It is about 1/8 of an inch deep, oozing slightly, and with a little patch of white at the bottom. The fur around it is missing, and surrounding the injury is a raised ring. She will not let us touch the leg at all, and simply blowing lightly on the leg caused her to move it. She is an indoor/outdoor cat, so anything could have caused it. We are keeping her indoors tonight, as a safety measure. What could it be?

Sounds like a bite wound or a puncture wound from something Skye could have snagged herself on while out and about. The wound needs to be explored, flushed, and possibly drained. Skye will very likely require some antibiotics in order to get better, as well as anti-inflammatory medication to control pain and/or fever if she has one. I would get her into the veterinarian in the morning at the very latest so that treatment can be instituted. The longer you wait, the worse the infection can become. Hope this makes sense.

This looks like an abscess or pocket of infection. Commonly, the cause is a puncture wound- usually from interaction with another cat. These infections are usually very painful. Your cat should be seen as soon as possible by your vet for proper treatment. This wound needs to be cleaned and drained, which may be quite painful. Your vet will also prescribe an appropriate antibiotic to treat the infection

It looks like a small abscess, probably from a scratch wound or bite wound from another cat outside, this will likely require antibiotic treatment, you should take her to the vet to get it checked and treated.

They can give her pain medication and clean and drain the infection. When the puss is caught under the skin it is painful and the overlying skin can become damaged and can fall off leaving a large open raw area. My rescued kitten has a blue, oozing leg bite. Is it infected?

The skin over the wound may be dying due to the infection. I recommend cleaning the area with a hot, damp cloth to loosen the scab and encourage the puss to drain out. Then you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If she won’t let you clean it because it’s to painful then take her in for pain medication and sedation so they can clean and treat the wound and infection. My cat has a deep leg wound but seems fine. Should I go to the vet?

Hello I can't tell from the picture how deep that wound is but it does look infected and there's underlying tissue and possibly muscle exposed. I recommend takinh your cat to see a veterinarian as she could be licking at the site when you're not watching and causing further infection. It may need to be closed or the vet may decide it should stay open (with some infected wounds closing can cause an abscess to form) and put her on antibiotics and pain medication. She might also need an E collar to prevent her from licking the area further.

My cat has a leg wound with green pus, no limp. Is it infected?

Ouch, poor Midnight! This wound could be from a bite from another animal or she could have injured herself. If there is pus present, then it is infected. She will need to see a vet to have it treated. For tonight, gently wash the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, then have her seen by a vet in the morning to get antibiotics to treat the infection. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor Luka! From the picture you have provided, the edges of the wound make it appear to be an older wound, not a fresh new one, and it appears to be healing. That being said, I cannot rule out any additional wounds or any infection without seeing him in person, and it is a pretty good size wound. To be safe, yes I would take him into the vet just to get it checked out and to make sure there aren't any other problems. I hope this helps!

My cat has a swollen leg with a draining wound. What should I do?

This is most likely an infection, a parasite under the skin or a cancer. These conditions all need medical care. I recommend to have your kitty examined by the veterinarian for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. She will need antibiotics, the area cleaned, possibly pain medication, possibly antiparasitics and an elizabethan collar. The vet may also recommend additional treatment. Tiger should be examined by a vet. That wound on his leg looks pretty bad, and he probably needs good antibiotics and pain medications. If Tiger goes outdoors, he may be getting into fights with other cats. Cat bites are notoriously nasty and can transmit some bad bacteria that cause infection and abscesses. If these wounds are not from infected cat bites, then I would be concerned about an autoimmune disorder or a severe body-wide infection.
