Can I use one flea treatment for all my cats, big and small?

It is likely to be safe but poorly effective as it would not have enough active ingredients for the size of cat. This would mean you would be undertreating and encouraging drug resistance in fleas (but not reducing the risk of any side effects should they occur). I strongly recommend using the correct size and strength for each cat

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. I think the answer depends on the exact medication and what the margin of safety is for that particular medication. Most likely it would be fine as the weight is so close, but I would want to know what medication it was and then overdose concerns as well as what the margin of safety is. Advantage treatment is a good start. If your kitty has flea allergies it is necessary to keep fleas from biting her. So: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian (Advantage is fine) and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust. Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas.

If it is available, my best topical flea treatment for cats is Cheristin. It is very effective and kills fleas before they bite, which is helpful for cats with flea allergies since it is the bite they react to. Comfortis is a tablet that is also very effective, but it can cause vomiting.

Personally I love Advantage. It’s effective and rarely causes a problem. You can use a small amount on several different spots on the head and neck where your cat can’t reach to lick it. That may prevent a large area of skin irritation. If you do see your cat becomeing irritated then use a cat safe flea shampoo and wash it off, and apply a thin film of cortisone cream on the area. Fleas can cause much more skin problems, in addition to anemia so using Advantage is a good way to control them and prevent those medical problems as well as flea bite allergic dermatitis in your cat. Baths do not help get rid of fleas. she is not too small to get flea treatment, at her age she can have every flea treatment on the market. here is the list of the best flea products on the market. I would not use the Advantage so close to applying another treatment. Wait at least 3 weeks since previous treatment. It may still be killing the fleas on the cat, but if fleas are still in the environment, new ones are jumping onto the cats. I would recommend treating the environment to help get rid of fleas more effectively. It will take at least 4 months to get rid of fleas if you are treating ONLY the pets.
