My Tonkinese cats are fighting. Will spay/neuter stop aggression?

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These can be common behaviors in male cats that are not neutered. I would recommend neutering him soon to help decrease these behaviors a bit. In addition, neutering him will help lessen the risks of cancers later in life as well as help decrease the feral cat population.

Neutering male cats is one of the most effective ways of limiting inter-cat aggression. There are no guarantees, but castration is definitely the first and best thing worth trying. If you are worried about the two cats hurting one another, I would keep them separated for the time being. Even after the castration there will still be some residual hormones left in the body for a short while. I would consider keeping the two separated for at least a week or two post-operatively before reintroduction. Hope this makes sense.

I would recommend getting them neutered as soon as possible. As they have gotten older they are becoming more aggressive and controlling of there territory. I would recommend neuter, increase number litter boxes, increase food and water dishes to start. Hopefully once all the added hormones are gone they will settle down

If the two females cats are not spayed I suggest you do that as soon as possible. That could sure be the reason for the tension. Not only that but if the females are not spayed and are going outside they will get pregnant guaranteed as soon as they go into heat. Usually the first heat cycle is around 6-7 months (so now). I also suggest you try some Feliway products in your home. These are basically "happy cat pheromones" that help to de-stress and relax cats. It works very well. Here is a link to their website. This sounds like a very frustrating issue! It is difficult to determine why Chino and her friend are suddenly having so many issues. At this point, the best thing you can do is get both cats spayed to remove hormonal influences that may be contributing to their aggression with one another. You can also use calming pheromone collars or diffusers (Feliway is one brand) for both cats. If the aggression continues after those options, it may be worth consulting a veterinary behaviorist to evaluate their behavior in your home. Keep both cats separated unless you are directly supervising them and avoid putting any part of your body between them if they fight. If they do begin to fight, dump water on them to distract from the situation and separate cats immediately. I hope that all goes well!

Whether they fight or not is going to depend on a lot of factors including how well they get along, their individual personalities, and if there are cats going into heat near them which could lead to competition. Three months is a bit young to be sexually active so they likely won't fight (if at all) until they are older, and you still have time to get them neutered. Looking to see if there is a low-cost or no-cost clinic in your area that you qualify for may also help with getting them neutered sooner.

It can take several weeks for testosterone levels to decrease after neutering. Until then, consider using a pheromone product, such as Feliway spray or plug in diffuser, to decrease any anxiety or aggression in the home. Provide extra litter boxes, bowls, toys and bedding to prevent food aggression or resource protection.
