Why is my male cat aggressive, hissing, biting, and fighting? Is neutering the answer?

That is unusual behavior so he may be irritable from being in pain. Outdoor unneutered male cats often fight and he may have an injury you can’t see which is painful. I recommend confining him to another room until he calms down so no one else gets injured, and see if he is eating normally. If this behavior continues please take him in for an exam to check for a wound or area of pain. In addition I would consider neutering him also. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfotunately, male cats are sexually mature as young as 6 months of age and typically act accordingly starting about then. I do not expect his “tomcat” behavior to stop until he is neutered or is geriatric (12+yrs). The behaviors could be especially bad any time there is an in-tact female anywhere nearby. Of course you can’t control that. Temporary distraction with toys, training, laser pointer, etc. may or may not work. Long story short, do yourself a favor and get him neutered sooner rather than later. Best wishes to you and Fuego!

The testosterone levels drop after the neuter and should be decreasing now. Hopefully this behavior will ease up as the remaining testosterone gets out of his system. If things don't resolve or his signs worsen, I would advise that your veterinarian take a look at both of them to assess any problems. I hope this gets better soon.

Neutering him would hopefully lessen his aggressive behavior. Another choice would be taking him to your vet and letting your vet screen him for a medical problem which could lead to abnormal behavior. Your vet can run tests (blood, urine, x-rays) to rule out medical disease. If a medical problem is ruled out, neutering and drug therapy could be used to try to lessen the aggression. Cat bites/scratches are very serious and this is a serious problem. Someone can get injured quite severely especially if they are immune compromised or have diabetes and suffer a cat bite. Another concern is rabies. Rabies causes aggression in animals along with other forms of nervous system diseases. It's important to get him evaluated as soon as possible. Good luck with Snoopy.

From the behaviours you are describing it sounds very likely linked to the fact that Manny isn't neutered yet. He is reaching sexual maturity and the hormones in his body are alerting his behaviour. After he is neutered it will take a little time but these behaviours should diminish.
