My cat has fever, mouth mucus, and is lethargic. Treat at home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

Pancho has been fine up until yesterday afternoon that he began to seclude him self from the family and the new kitty which is completely unlike him. I realized that he does seem to have a bit of a fever and has mucus like substance in his mouth. I found him sleeping with his tongue out also covered in mucus. Is this something that could possibly be treated at home ?

I would be concerned that Pancho has an infection in his mouth and would recommend seeing a veterinarian. Kidney disease, viral diseases, and burns to the mouth from ingesting caustic chemicals could cause similar signs. If Pancho is eating and drinking normally you might be able to wait to have him seen until tomorrow, but if he is not eating or if he seems very lehargic you should see a vet today.
