My cat just had surgery. Is a fever normal or should I worry?

A normal temperature in a cat will range between 100 and 102.5, so a temperature of 103 in a stressed kitty could potentially be a result of stress/excitement and not something we would normally be excessively concerned about. If your kitty seems to be normal at home then I would wait for news from your vet tomorrow and continue to monitor her and if she shows any changes in her behavior contact your vet earlier.

I understand being worried about Cece. I would take it once before bed, and if it's normal, leave her for the night. If it's on the high side of normal (about 102.5F), take at least once more during the night. I hope this helps!

This can be normal after a surgery. You can gently place a cold compress around his neck which will reduce the pain and inflammation. As long as he's eating and drinking he will be fine. The first day is always the worst. Please give the pain medication first thing in the morning. Keeping Bastian quiet and out for short potty walks only will reduce the chance of increased swelling from over activity. You can also do some massage or petting to soothe him and it will relax his muscles so he can rest. The temperature itself isn’t an emergency, but it is definitely a fever. If he goes outdoors I would start feeling all over for an abscess from a fight. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon, but as long as there are no other clinical signs such as difficulty breathing etc then I think having him seen by your veterinarian tomorrow is appropriate. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without knowing Riggins case it is hard to say. You said they milked the hair tie through the colon. Did they check the entire GI tract for more? The fever usually means infection but it could also be inflammation. Short of doing another exploratory surgery, I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound to get a good look at all the organs and the layers of the intestinal tract. You may still need to do surgery to get biopsies of the organs. I hope this gives you a starting point. Good luck and kisses to Riggins!

That is a nirnak temperature for cats! It can go up to 102 without being considered a fever. If he is eating and drinking well then I would monitor him for any changes. He may have over done it and just need a rest. If he is not back to normal after 24 hours then I would get him checked.

If the fever persists longer than 12hours, she becomes weak or refuses water for longer than 4hours you should return to your vet. Do not give any human or other medications to such a young kitten but keep her in a cool, well ventilated area with easy access to fresh water and soft food.
