My dog is warm and uncomfortable after surgery. Is a fever normal?

Typically with dehiscence, they will be lethargic, not eating, have a fever (over 103) and just not themselves. While it takes time to recover from a surgery like this I would recommend having your veterinarian just examine Patton. I rather be safe then sorry, especially if you are concerned with his behavior at home. It may be normal for him post surgery but it may also be that he is very stoic and there is more going on. As a veterinarian I rather my clients bring the animals in to get looked at and it be nothing then wait it out and it be serious. He may be dysphoric from any narcotics that may have been used. It is also possible that he is painful, would he let you try to ice pack the area? Lastly a fever can also cause shivering so you could take a rectal temperature to be sure he is not febrile. A normal temperature is 100-102 F. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Abdominal surgery is a serious surgery, especially when infection is involved. So sleeping a lot would be normal and one way of healing. The shivering and panting is likely caused by pain, so make sure she takes her pain medicine on time. Best let her rest. She may not be hungry today, which is okay. Make sure she has fresh water available. She should be a lot better tomorrow.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Buster, it can be exhausting on surgery day. It can be considered a "normal" occurrence for pets to be tired the day of surgery due to the anesthesia and analgesics (pain control medications) administered for the surgery itself. On occasion they may also experience some mild vomiting (i.e. once following a car ride, after eating supper/drinking water). Buster should want to sleep tonight and we do not want him running around/playing until the surgery site is healed (minimum 2 weeks). If he is too mobile/active this could result in hemorrhaging at the surgery site or failure of the incision. If he continues to vomit, seems painful/agitated, or excessively tired/lethargic then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian. I instruct my clients to always monitor there mucous membrane (oral gum) color at home the night following surgery to make sure it stays pink (normal color).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Vinnie! Each dog and cat reacts differently to sedation and anesthesia. They feel goofy or strange and can react by pacing and panting. Since Vinnie is a large breed dog be sure that his belly isn't bloated. If he is trying to vomit then I would immediately take him to an emergency Vet. He could also be uncomfortable, if he is due for pain medications then I would give it to him. Try taking him for a quick walk outside then see if you can help him settle down in his bed. See if laying with or next to him helps his settle and sleep. His incision looks fine. Hello. It can take up to 24 hours for all the sedation to work through her system, so she is very likely still a bit under the influence. I would like for you to look at her gums, the tissue just above her canine teeth, to see if she looks nice & pink. If her color is pale, greyish or bluish, get her back to your vet immediately. You can certainly lay with her, & if she is just on a cold floor, I would try to get her on something warmer. The pain medication is just indicated for once a day, so you can not give her any more just yet, nor can you give any aspirin, Tylenol or Alleve. Your veterinarian may have something else on hand if it looks like she needs more, but most patients are feeling much, much better by the next day. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Linus. We would not expect a fever after surgery, so if you think he has a fever I would recommend an examination at a veterinarian as soon as possible.
