My cat's face is swollen after ear medicine. What can I do at home?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 years and 1 month old | 15 lbs

Cat has a swollen face. Was given medicine oti pack into her ear and that side of her face became swollen. I can't visit the vet immediately but I was wondering if there was anything I could do now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Temari! She is cute!

The only way I could see the Oti pack being the cause of the swelling would be if she was having an allergic reaction to the medications. Other causes of facial swelling are a tooth root abscess, an abscess or mass behind the eye or if she goes outside an abscess from a cat bite.

I highly recommend having Temari seen today by your Vet before the weekend. If it is the Oti pack then the Vet may want to rinse it out. I would at least call your Vet to discuss what you are seeing. I do not recommend giving cats any OTC or human medications, they can not metabolize human drugs and tend to react significantly.

I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian, as medications (such as an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory) or even a dental procedure may be necessary to help resolve it. Good luck!

Even though the swelling is non-painful an abscess would be most likely. It is also possible that Cik Ning has a skin growth or an enlarged lymph node in this area. A warm compress certainly wouldn't hurt, and I think that is probably the main thing you would be able to do at home to hopefully help with comfort before your visit.

Why is my cat's cheek swollen with black spots near her ear?

The most likely cause of swelling in that area is an abscess - this could have been from fighting with another cat or TeeTee may have scratched herself and caused the injury. An ear infection may the cause of her scratching if she is indoor only and not in contact with other cats. Either way, she will probably need antibiotics prescribed by your vet. If the abscess bursts before you take her in (try to go tomorrow) you may see discharge and blood. This can be carefully cleaned with just warm salty water and cotton balls.

I am sorry to hear about your kitten! I would recommend bringing her in for an exam at your vet. If the swelling is progressing tonight or she develops any difficulty breathing I would get her to the emergency vet. We could have swelling do to an allergic reaction from an insect bite or exposure to any other substance/plant (most of the time we don't see a mark/know the cause) but I would also want to check for things like an abscess or infected tooth causing swelling. It sounds like he may also have a mild upper respiratory infection (like us having a cold) that he has passed to the other cats. My cat's ear is swollen. What's the cause and when should I see a vet?

Poor Beba! It could be she injured her ear, or she could be suffering from an ear infection causing her to scratch her ear a lot leading to the swelling. I would take her into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling, and can treat her. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
