My cat has a red eye corner. Should I use home remedies or see a vet?

Poor Pip! Looks like he has a little abrasion there. It’s reasonable to put an e-collar on him and wait a few days to see if it starts looking better on its own. Since it is so close to the eye, there’s nothing over the counter that you can safely put on it at home, just keep it clean (water only) and dry and use a cone (ecollar) to keep him from rubbing at it. If it’s not looking better in 3-4 days, take him to the vet. If it starts looking worse, if he starts developing additional clinical signs, or if he starts having additional sores show up elsewhere, don’t wait, take him in. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

It doesn't look too bad in the picture. Poppy may have injured herself by rubbing her face against something in the home. I would keep an eye on it for now. if it gets bigger or appears infected (redness, swelling, warm to the touch, pus), then have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Neptune's eye is red and he is pawing at his face or near his eye, it may be infected and bothering him. I would recommend Neptune see his veterinarian soon for an eye exam. Your veterinarian may want do a few tests of his eye to check for underlying conditions such as scratch on the cornea or other issues. He may go home with antibiotic drops for his eye or other medications as needed. I hope this helps!

Keep an eye on it and if it does not look better by tomorrow, or if he starts to scratch at it or rub his face, then get him seen by your vet as soon as possible. The worry is that if he starts rubbing or scratching, that he'll injure the eye itself and that will require more intensive treatment than a simple scratch or mild eye infection.

This could be a viral or bacterial infection that may need to be addressed by your veterinarian. There is likely nothing OTC that can be given to resolve it. An exam would be strongly recommended to prevent permanent damage or loss of vision.

Excess tearing can be caused by a few different things, commonly including allergies, blocked tear duct, bacterial or viral infection. If there is a creamy discharge, if Pipsi is squinting often or experiences light sensitivity, or her eye appears very red, I recommend that she be evaluated by a vet. If those symptoms are not present and she seems comfortable, you can continue to clean the area with water. Sometimes viral infections that cause eye issues can respond to a lysine supplement. You can try a product like Vetri-Lysine Plus, but it may take a couple weeks for the virus to stop replicating after starting lysine.
