My cat woke up today with a slightly swollen and irritated left eye. He rubbed it not long ago. I wonder if the swelling is just irritation and will go down on its own or not.

Hello,
It does appear that the tissue around the eyes is swollen, which could be a sign of inflammation or pain. I recommend taking Mao to your veterinarian. They can best guide you after performing an ophthalmic exam.
I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Poor Stripes! No, this is not normal and I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian again. He also needs to wear an elizabethan collar at all times because any rubbing of the eye can make it worse.
The vet may switch the eye medication or may have him wear an elizabethan collar and watch it for a few days (in case this is related to rubbing). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
