Why is my cat's eye shining strangely in daylight and squinting?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He seems to have an opacity in his eye. This can be on the cornea (surface of his eye) or on the lens. He could have a scratch across his eye or even a scar. If the problem is on his lens, then a cataract is a possibility. His veterinarian will examine his eye with a special instrument called an ophthalmic scope. Some tests may be recommended as well. I hope this information helps!

I see what you mean. He could be squinting because the light is painful to his eye, and it may be he has injured his eyes or has an eye infection. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into a vet right away to get checked out. Best of luck.

That may be the the tapetum lucidum causing the green. This is a normal structure of the cat's eye, and it's actually present in both eyes. The angle of the photo with the flash only caught the reflection off one of them.

I see what you are seeing from the pictures. The pupil is just an opening in the iris (colored part) and what sits inside the eye (behind the pupil, what you see though the pupil) are the lens and the contents of the back of the eye (fundus including retina, etc.). A cloudiness to the eye can occur due to inflammation (uveitis), lens related changes (nuclear sclerosis or cataracts), or sometimes due to cellular infiltrate in the eye. It is good that there are no vision changes and that the eye is comfortable. A cause for this haze should be able to be readily identified by an eye exam by your vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is gorgeous! Her eyes are likely reacting to the light and her surroundings and this is unlikely to be an actual issue. I would continue to monitor her for signs of eye discharge or discomfort and have her evaluated if any of these are seen. However, I think she is most likely just fine. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can think of 2 things: 1) uveitis which is inflammation of the uveal structures in the eye. It can cause light sensitivity. It is diagnosed by measure the intra-ocular pressure. It would come back low. Causes of uveitis in cats is trauma to the eye, feline leukemia, infection, metabolic disease, etc. 2) Haws syndrome. Which is GI disease. In a young cat I would be sure he gets dewormed regardless of a normal stool sample. Consider a dietary change if deworming doesn't resolve the issue. I hope Sofia does well!

If there is an emergency vet within a reasonable distance, I would recommend that Willie get checked out sooner than later. Eye problems can be very painful, and can go from bad to worse very quickly (even overnight). There can be many causes of squinting an eye, including something stuck under the eyelid, corneal abrasion or ulcer, autoimmune disease, among a few others. Without personally seeing it I can't be certain, but what you may be seeing with him "looking to the upper right" is the effect of a raised third eyelid covering the inner part of the eye to make it look weird. You can try to flush the eye with a saline eye rinse, but do not apply any medications topically. Keep him inside in a dim room since bright light makes many eye problems more painful.
