My cat's eye is red, lumpy, and watering. What can I do now?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Maple. Eye problems are considered to be emergency appointments in my opinion. The eyes are very important sense organs and problems with them can spiral out of control quickly which can affect vision and even blind the pet. I would advise that you take Maple to your veterinarian. They will want to get a history, perform an exam, evaluate the eye, and probably want to run some tests. One important test to run is an eye stain that evaluates the surface of the eye known as the cornea. Corneal ulcers, scratches, infections need to be documented before an accurate treatment plan can be discussed. Some eye problems require topical steroid use but if the cornea is damaged, they are NOT to be used since they delay healing of the cornea. So best advise here is get Maple in to see your vet as soon as possible.

Ouch! Since that is so close to the eye, it should be seen by a vet in person just to make sure it doesn't become infected and spread to the eye itself, and to try and figure out what may have caused the initial injury. Your vet can also provide any pain or antibiotic medications as needed to help the spot heal. Until you can get to the vet, it is best to keep the spot clean and dry, and make sure that the eye isn't bothered. An Elizabethan (cone) collar is also a good idea to prevent scratching at it which can lead to infection or accidental scratching of the eye.

Oh my. This appears to possibly be an injury to the eye and subsequent infection. It is hard to tell the degree of injury based on the photos, a vet exam is definitely needed her. I would highly recommend taking Mow to your local vet right away to get this eye tested, fully examined and treated. Best case scenario is that there isn't permanent damage done to this eye and antibiotics/pain medication /- drainage of a potential abscess are needed to get Mow better. This one does not look like a typical benign and harmless ski tag (still could be !), so please take Fluffington to your local vets for an appointment. Your vet may recommend to treat it with anti-inflammatory cream or to aspirate it with a needle to find out what type of growth this is.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kitty. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He needs to be examined and the extent of his injuries determined. His eye will need to evaluated. It appears as though his third eyelid may be elevated and possibly damaged. The veterinarian will determine if medication such as antibiotics are warranted. If there is eye disease, such as a corneal ulcer or scratch across the eye, this will require specific treatment. Surgery is possible if there is an infection under the skin such as an abscess. If he is not as active, this is likely because he does not feel well. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to cats. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Betsy. She may have experienced an insect bite or sting as you mentioned. If this is the case, the swelling should start resolving within 24 hours. If it gets bigger or she develops difficulty breathing, these are signs of an allergic reaction. She will need to see her veterinarian. If the eye itself is red or develops discharge, she will need to have this evaluated as well. If the swelling starts to come down and she is otherwise acting normal, then she will be just fine. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. That lump could represent the site of an infection like a tooth root abscess which could also explain the eye discharge. I highly recommend that you have Simba evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!
