My cat has an eye infection. Can I use teabags or human eye drops?

Hi again ! Uno recently got some sort of infection on his left eye and can't open it completely + he is being sad and out of mood all the time , can we rest some teabag on it ? Or is it fine if we just use human eye drops as well ? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, a tea bag will not cure Uno's eye infection, and I would not recommend using human eye drops on it. That's because a cat's eye reacts differently to human eye medications than a human's eye, and you can accidentally do harm to his eye with this. The eye is such an important and delicate structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Uno into a vet immediately to have his eye examined and treated.

Depending on what is the underlying cause of it, human drops might be potentially useful. Please write to us what kind of drops they are and we will give you specific advices on it. Ideally a check up is needed at your local veterinarian as deep corneal ulceration could be present and medical treatment won't be enough.

No, that won't be helpful to Uno, nor will it cure his eye infection. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. He needs an antibiotic eye ointment from the vet in order to treat it, and I would have Uno seen by a vet immediately.

It is never advised to buy OTC eye drops for a cat because a cat's eye reacts differently to human eye medications than a human's eye does. In addition, some of these drops contain ingredients that are unsafe for use in cats. It sounds like Cleo may have an eye infection, and she will need to see a vet to get a topical antibiotic ointment to treat the infection. I would take her into the vet first thing Monday. Until then, it's fine to use a warm wash cloth to wipe away any gunk that comes from her eye. I hope this helps!

You will have to use your best judgement on if Binx needs to see the vet tonight or if it can wait, since I am not able to evaluate the eye. If he has chronic eye infections, they may be viral, and the antibiotics may or may not be needed. Helping him keep it clean by using a warm wet washcloth until he sees the vet.

A check up would be needed anyway as the signs you are describing could be compatible with corneal ulceration. Antibiotics eye drops may be necessary (clindamycin eye drops 0.5% for humans would be ok). If a corneal ulcer is present medical treatment may not be enough to solve the problem.
