My cat has an eye growth that's bleeding. Does he need a vet?

It could simply be a benign growth, as it looks like it could be one in your picture, but unfortunately I cannot make the determination for sure without seeing him in person and doing tests on it. It is a bit concerning that it has grown up to 4x in size and is bleeding. It could be bleeding because he is scratching at it, but again I don't know unless I see him in person. Due to the fact it has grown in size and is bleeding for some reason, then yes I do think this is concerning enough to see the vet. It would be good to get the exact diagnosis of the bump; in addition, your cat is 10, which means he's a senior cat, and there is always a risk that any bump in a senior cat could be malignant. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kitty. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He needs to be examined and the extent of his injuries determined. His eye will need to evaluated. It appears as though his third eyelid may be elevated and possibly damaged. The veterinarian will determine if medication such as antibiotics are warranted. If there is eye disease, such as a corneal ulcer or scratch across the eye, this will require specific treatment. Surgery is possible if there is an infection under the skin such as an abscess. If he is not as active, this is likely because he does not feel well. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to cats. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. If it bleeds when you try to remove it and comes back, then I would be concerned about some type of mass or cancer. Goop from the eye wouldn't keep doing this. I think it is a good idea to have the vet take a second look at Jake. Don't clean it up before you go.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your pictures the white thing looks like a skin mass. It could be something benign like a skin tag or an sebaceous adenoma or something more serious. Sadly a lot of things look the same. I am not sure how old Jack is, but it might be best to have it looked at by your Vet and determine if it is a mass. If it is they may recommend removing it and sending it out for biopsy. Hello! This is probably a small cyst or pimple-like structure, but given the age of Jak, I do recommend that he gets checked out by a vet sometime soon to be sure it isn't a cancerous lump. At the vet's office, they will give Jak a full exam, and possibly take a sample of cells from the lump with a small needle to look at under the microscope (called a fine needle aspirate, or FNA). This well help the vets see if the lump is something that can be watched, or if it needs to come off. Good luck, and I hope Jak's lump turns out to be nothing to worry about!
