My cat has a bleeding skin bump that's growing. Should I see a vet?

Hello. My indoor cat (10yr, male, neutered, 13.5lbs) has had a small bump on his skin for 1+ years. Small enough I had trouble finding it to keep an eye on it. Yesterday, I noticed it has grown maybe 3x or 4x in size and is bleeding. It is behind his front shoulder blade. It is very raised, I can feel it over his fur when I pet him. I was wondering if this looks like a normal cat bump/wart, or if it is concerning enough to get it looked at in-person. Photo attached. Thank you.

Thank you for providing a picture of the bump on your cat, it's very helpful! It could simply be a benign growth, as it looks like it could be one in your picture, but unfortunately I cannot make the determination for sure without seeing him in person and doing tests on it. It is a bit concerning that it has grown up to 4x in size and is bleeding. It could be bleeding because he is scratching at it, but again I don't know unless I see him in person. Due to the fact it has grown in size and is bleeding for some reason, then yes I do think this is concerning enough to see the vet. It would be good to get the exact diagnosis of the bump; in addition, your cat is 10, which means he's a senior cat, and there is always a risk that any bump in a senior cat could be malignant. I'd give your vet a call to make an appointment. I hope this helps!

Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. My cat has red, bleeding stomach bumps. Should I take her to the vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Based on its location, this could also be a mammary gland tumor which in most cases are malignant. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My cat had a bump near his ear that burst and is now bleeding.

My cat has a lump on his shoulder and fur loss. Should I see a vet?

It's hard to tell the size but it looks like it may be a benign wart or growth. It appears to be more on the surface of the skin which is good, and it is well defined. Cats do get malignant skin growths so it is a good idea to have your veterinarian examine it and feel underneath also. They can easily remove this if necessary and do a biopsy. My senior cat has a growing spot on her face. Is a vet visit urgent?

Ouch! That definitely should be seen by your vet. They will need to take a sample, generally a fine-needle aspirate, to help determine what the growth is and if it needs to be removed, drained, or treated. If your kitty doesn't like going to the vet, you can call ahead to see if they can prescribe a sedative to give at home before bringing her in which can help make things less stressful (and easier for your vet to get a sample of the growth). Some veterinarians also provide home services, so if you feel kitty would be calmer at home, a housecall vet may be a good alternative.

My cat has a red bump on his skin. When should I take him to the vet?

Thank you for attaching a picture of Leo's bump! It could be from an injury, such as him scratching his chin and accidentally cutting himself. I would keep an eye on it for now. If it doesn't go away in the next few days, gets bigger, there is pus from the area, and/or it starts to bother him, take him into the vet. Best of luck.

My cat's leg tumor is bleeding. Does he need an emergency vet visit?

Hi there. This mass is somewhat unusual-looking from what I can see in the photo, so there's no way to know what it is without being able to take a biopsy, or remove it and send it to the lab for testing. So yes, I do recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked in person and see how your veterinarian suggests proceeding from there. If your kitty is acting normal, I would not consider this to be an emergency, so it should be fine to wait and take him tomorrow. Many veterinary clinics have implemented no-contact protocols during this time (curbside service, etc.) to minimize the risk of COVID transmission, so I would encourage you to ask your veterinarian about their current protocols for this if you're concerned.
