What's the best safe and gentle eye cleaner for my cat's teary eyes?

Clear eye discharge is not uncommon. I would not be worried about this unless the discharge turns yellow or green which would indicate an infection. You can use saline solution or a commercial eye wash to rinse the eyes out daily if he will let you. Otherwise just wiping the discharge away when you see it is fine. I would use a cotton ball soaked in warm water to wipe the eyes and not a Q-tip. They also have pre-made eye wipes for cats if you would rather use that. Persians have such compressed eye sockets that the normal amount of tears that every cat has ends up tearing in a Persian. Also because the eyes have more exposure they probably create a little more tear film. Nothing will “fix” this. However, rinsing with isotonic saline can help rinse any debris out and keep the cornea as healthy as possible. I would keep doing that. If the eyes are red or if the discharge is green the. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Human products that are natural tears such as Clear Eyes can be used, just be extra certain there are no medicinal ingredients. If the eyes are red and watering however, she might need medications and a visit to the vet is a good idea. As long as she isn't squinting, you can try the natural tears first, but if she isn't 100% by tomorrow then I would have her seen, or if she starts squinting then have her seen ASAP. How lovely of you to rescue Koya! You can use a wash cloth soaked in warm water to remove any discharge and crusts from her eyes. It's never recommended to use any OTC eye treatments on a cat's eyes. This is because a cat's eye will react differently to it than a human's eye, and you could potentially do serious damage to her eyes. The vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment for her. The elevation of the third eyelid really just tells me that the eye is uncomfortable, it doesn’t really make a diagnosis. It can be a viral infection, an injury, allergies, or others. I would warm compress the eye several times a day, as well as gently rinse with an isotonic saline rinse several times a day. This can be purchased at any pharmacy in the human eye section. I wouldn't recommend it. If she has eye discharge, I'd recommend using a moistened clean cloth or paper towel (using lukewarm tap water) to wipe it away and then another clean dry one to dry off the area. I'd also recommend talking to her vet to see if there's anything that can be done to help with the discharge. Some Persian's just have discharge, but she could also have dry eye that making the discharge worse. Good luck!

If this doesn’t work or if she continues to squint, she really does need to be seen by a vet as there’s no safe home care remedy for an eye injury or infection. All the best to you and Missa.
