Why does my cat shed so much despite daily brushing? What helps?

Hello, sorry to hear about Mousie. Cats in general shed hair normally on a daily basis. This is a normal process that cats undergo. Some cats shed more when they are outdoors in certain times of the year, where as indoor cats may she their coat year round. Long hair cats, tend leave a more noticeable shed than short haired cats. Brushing frequently is one way to decrease the amount of shed from your cat. Having a cat tree for them to rest on will also help decrease the amount of fur on your furniture. Finally, keeping your cat in a lean condition so that they can groom themselves as well. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Some cats do shed more than others, but if you feel it is extreme compared to your other cats you may want to have your veterinarian do a thorough examination of her skin to make sure she doesn't have evidence of a dermatologic disease that could be causing excessive shedding. Shedding has also been linked to stress. If her skin seems normal and she is otherwise healthy it may simply be normal for her to be shedding like this - make sure she's on a high quality diet, brush twice daily, and consider bathing her every couple of weeks if you think she'll tolerate it.

Unfortunately, shedding is a natural part of being a cat so there is no real way to stop Miss Kitty from shedding but there are ways you can lessen the amount of fur she sheds. Certainly brushing is a great way- I would do this every day. Having her groomed regularly with a groomer or your vet's office (if they offer grooming services) can really help as well. Some cat owners have their cat's fur shaved or cut back to help lessen the amount they shed. You may consider grooming Miss Kitty on a regular basis if her shedding is becoming a problem. This could be due to an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Chibi regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

It could be Snowy is suffering from allergies, a skin infection, mites, fleas, or even a medical causing her hair loss. This isn't normal, so you need to have her seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated.

Lil Bub is quite handsome! It is really common for cats to start increase their shedding around 6-7 months of age. So this could be just normal shedding for him since he is a long haired cat. If he is scratching a lot this could definitely be the cause of increased shedding. You can try Benadryl twice a day to help with the itching. If this doesn't help, I would have your vet take a look at him to see what is causing the itch and see if there are any stronger meds that he needs to help. Most cats have "major" sheds twice a year. In the Fall, as they prepare to grow in a winter coat and in Spring to get rid of it. They will shed some hair throughout the year to maintain a healthy coat. Continue brushing Raven daily. It will help her shed and will prevent her hair from getting all over to a certain degree.
