My cat sheds a lot, even with brushing. How can I reduce it?

Hi, the shedding I this breed is quite pronounced just because of the hair and the hair cycle itself. It is a natural process so it can not be stopped as such, you can help him shedding by daily grooming his fur or rubbing him gently with a wet towel. You should get him used to get groomed by keeping it a positive experience associated with treats and not using force to restrain him. Start with short periods of time, even seconds and always aim to finish in a positive way, I.w with a treat and not by her wriggling away and escaping. I like a brush called Furbliss but I am not sure if it will be available in your country.

Hello, sorry to hear about Mousie. Cats in general shed hair normally on a daily basis. This is a normal process that cats undergo. Some cats shed more when they are outdoors in certain times of the year, where as indoor cats may she their coat year round. Long hair cats, tend leave a more noticeable shed than short haired cats. Brushing frequently is one way to decrease the amount of shed from your cat. Having a cat tree for them to rest on will also help decrease the amount of fur on your furniture. Finally, keeping your cat in a lean condition so that they can groom themselves as well. Hope this helps and best of luck.

An air purifier could help, or using HEPA air filters in your vacuum and air intake vents. Brushing daily can help with shedding and there are some sprays that claim to help although I don’t know how much they really do.

I have had one of my cats for about 5 years now and he is still skittish at times even when things are fairly familiar. I guess what I'm trying to say is that some cats are just like this. It may be extremely hard to improve the fear level of Angel but you can try. I would just be very calm around her and try not to have her in really noisy environments. Anything you can do to calm her would be the way to go. Brushing is another story too. Some cats and dogs love being brushed while others cannot stand it. You may want to do really brief brushing sessions with her and increase the sessions as she becomes used to it. They make brushing gloves that fit on your hand so it's more like petting while brushing, you might want to try that. Training cats and working them through problems can be very challenging but not impossible. Just do the best you can. If you feel like Angel is really fearful/anxious and she is not happy you can always consult with your veterinarian to see if they have any other ideas for training and brushing. They can also discuss the use of some drugs to help with these behaviors but ultimately you will have to work on some behavior modification because the drugs alone will not fix anything. They may get you to a good point though and you can then wean her off the drugs slowly once the desired results are achieved. Good luck with Angel.

Some cats do shed more than others, but if you feel it is extreme compared to your other cats you may want to have your veterinarian do a thorough examination of her skin to make sure she doesn't have evidence of a dermatologic disease that could be causing excessive shedding. Shedding has also been linked to stress. If her skin seems normal and she is otherwise healthy it may simply be normal for her to be shedding like this - make sure she's on a high quality diet, brush twice daily, and consider bathing her every couple of weeks if you think she'll tolerate it.

Yes, this is normal but there is not really much you can do but daily brushing. All those "low shedding" products are a waste of money in my opinion. The only thing I can think of that may help is putting her on a salmon oil supplement. Both cats can take it. There could be a medical reason why Cinder sheds so much such as stress, poor diet, allergies, or an infection. I'd have her checked out by a vet to make sure everything is ok health wise. Best of luck.
