My cat eats plastic toys and vomits. What should I do about it?

Generally, the plastic of cat toys is fairly thin and flexible, but if it is hard with sharp edges, it is certainly possible that it can cause problems similar to a bone. If Mia vomited the toy, hopefully this will not be an issue. If Mia continues to vomit, does not eat, does not seem to feel well or is straining to defecate, I would certainly have your veterinarian examine her. Good luck! Oh no it's not good that Kitty ate that vomit! At most, I would expect that eating this vomit could cause some GI upset, causing her to vomit and/or have diarrhea. It's good that it doesn't look like she has eaten the plastic bag, and if she ate the bag, I would be concerned that the bag could cause a foreign body obstruction. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you see any vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I can certainly understand being worried about your cat eating plastic! The problem with plastic is that is can get caught in the GI tract, causing an obstruction. The best thing to do is to take him into a vet on call or an ER vet to get a shot to induce vomiting now. That will get the plastic out of him, and prevent any chance of obstruction. If it did cause an obstruction, he would need surgery to remove it, so it's better to avoid a big surgery bill now by having him induced to vomit to remove it. There is a chance it could pass on it's own, and you can chose to monitor him over the next 72 hours. Signs of obstruction including vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy, and constipation, and should you see any of those signs, he would need to see a vet immediately. In my opinion, it's best to be safe, so I would recommend taking him into a vet now.

They will always ingest small amounts of litter that you cannot control as a small portion sticks to their feet or gets trapped in the fur and they groom it off to keep clean. It should be not be a large amount or anything that can cause harm. If he is eating large amounts, then the only option is to change types of litter. this will be trial and error to see what he will still use without eating. Look for a different scent or texture or different size particle to see if that helps

I am not quite sure what she may have thrown up in the picture. It looks like it could be rice or even intestinal parasites. Since she is still vomiting parts of the plastic bag, I would be concerned that there may have been something missed during surgery. If she shredded the bag, there could be tiny pieces in her stomach and/or small intestines that would never be felt when look at these organs during exploratory surgery. She may need additional treatment to help these pass, including IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, enemas, or medications to help stimulate her intestines to move.

I would take Moony to a vet ASAP especially if she is vomiting up plastic. She obviously ingested something she shouldn't have. Vomiting 7 times in one day is very serious and could be an indication of an intestinal obstruction. The sooner she is treated, the better. I do not suggest you wait. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I recommend that you avoid this behavior as much as possible and let him know that this is wrong when observed. Clinical signs consistent with a gastrointestinal obstruction include inappetence, vomiting and abdominal pain. If ever observed, have Salem evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
