Why does my cat eat grass and then choke? Is it normal or serious?

Some cats may eat grass to settle an upset stomach or to self induce vomiting. Cats will also eat grass due to boredom or simply because it tastes good. As long as Kitty is behaving normally, there is likely no cause for concern.

Some dogs like to eat grass! As long as they have good appetites (for dog food!) and are not frequent vomiters, there is nothing wrong with eating grass. I do recommend that Chopi is routinely dewormed for common intestinal parasites (often included in monthly heartworm preventatives) and that you do not treat your grass with any chemicals.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Personally I think the change in chewing is likely unrelated to eating the grass and it being stuck. Since Sandy is a senior cat the most common reason for a change in chewing or preference from dry to wet food is oral or teeth pain, underlying metabolic diseases (kidney or liver disease, intestinal disease) or nausea which is why she may have been eating the grass in the first place. I would have her seen this week by your Vet for an exam/check teeth and weight and senior blood work. Hopefully it is just her teeth and if her blood work is normal then schedule a dental procedure. It's possible Princess may be feeling a bit nauseated or have some GI upset if she is choking or gagging/drooling. Bringing her to your vet for a checkup to rule out GI upset, allergies, etc, and bringing along a stool sample to test for any common issues such as parasites, etc that can cause GI upset may help.

This could indicate a mild case of stomach irritation called gastritis. Dogs have no need for chlorophyll. If she's eating a balanced commercial diet and absorbing it Chloe should be getting all the vitamins and minerals and needs. As long as Chloe is eating, drinking and acting normally you could watch her dog now. But if she stops eating, vomits blood or coffee-ground looking material, or seems painful she should get checked out by her veterinarian

Hello, thank you for your question about Kiyah. Often times when dogs eat grass it is because they are feeling nauseous. Nausea can be a sign of GI upset or other underlying GI disease. If Kiyah is otherwise acting ok and has continued to eat and drink normally, you could continue to monitor her. Additionally, you could offer her a bland/easily digestable diet such as boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice to help settle her stomach. If these symptoms continue or Kiyah begins vomiting, refusing food, or becomes lethargic I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. They can examine her and discuss the need for additional diagnostics or treatments. Hope this helps!

Poor girl. Her repeated swallowing behavior and eating grass suggest that Snickers is likely nauseous. She may have eaten something that upset her stomach or may even have something caught in her throat. See if you can get her to open her mouth so you can take a peek towards the back of her throat for any foreign objects. IF she does not allow you to do so and otherwise seems fine, just let her rest tonight and get her examined in the morning by your regular vet if the problem continues. I have seen this a lot in dogs that have a stick stuck to the roof of their mouth, so a foreign object is highly suspected here. In most cases, if the pet isn't vomiting and still eating, the problem can be resolved with your vet's help. I hope that your fur baby Snickers gets some relief soon! Best wishes and take care.
