What's the brown/green growth in my cat's ear? Could it be a tick?

This actually does not look like a tick. This could be a little cyst or wart. Check it at the bottom closest to the skin. If it has tiny legs, it is a tick, and you should pull it out; if not, then it is a growth and you may want your vet to examine it.

I would recommend taking him to a vet to confirm and have them remove it. If it is, you have to make sure you remove the entire head and in that location it may be tricky. I don’t know about tick borne diseases in Ireland but in the US ticks can carry diseases that could cause problems in pets. The vet can discuss these further when they see Snowball. This looks like ceruminous cystomatosis which is a non-cancerous tumor of the wax glands in the ears. Treatment involves removal of the lesions (which often will regrow and need to be removed again) either surgically, with a laser, or with cautery. It is important to note that surgical removal will likely lead to scar tissue formation and some deformation of the ear flap. I suggest you have Mowgli examined by your vet when you can.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. I can't tell based on the photo if there are potential legs there. Try to look at the base of this thing near where it is attached to the ear to see if you see many legs sticking out on the sides. if there are no legs, then this is a mass. I would then recommend having your vet take a look at this for further testing and possible surgical removal. If this is a tick, then proper removal of the tick should be done with hemostats through your vet or any other person who is trained in proper tick removal. I would then recommend a high quality flea/tick preventative such as Simparica, Bravecto, Nexgard or even over the counter Advantix can work in many pets.
