Why is my cat's mouth dry and crusty after ringworm treatment?

Hello. Yes, sometimes ringworm can be stubborn. If your cat has numerous lesions, or they are along the eyes and mouth, your cat should be on an oral antifungal medication. Also, cats will often lick the medication off as soon as you apply it, so it is not effective. If you are not using an Elizabethan collar, that could help prevent licking. Cases that do not respond to topical treatment often do better with a prescription oral antifungal. I would also make sure that it is actually ringworm. It may need to be rechecked by your veterinarian. Thank you

Oral systemic medication only (intrafungol) for ringworm must be given instead of lime dip and sprays. I would not give anything else a part from the oral medication, as the signs (dry hair sores) on legs seem to be due to an allergic reaction to one or to a combination of different products you are giving. I would then repeat repeat the culture again and if negative I would stop intrafungol as well. Please send us picture of the sores to have more specific advices. The cream isn't harmful but I have never come across a topical medication that has been effective for treating ringworm in cats aside from prescription-based lime sulfur dips. The concern is that the Microsporum canis (fungal organism causing ringworm) is spread diffusely throughout a cat's entire hair coat, such that an isolated topical spray will not cover all surfaces of every hair, and lead to frequent recurrence. Since the topical treatment isn't working and Nova's spots are worse, I would go back to the vet to get an oral treatment. I hope that all goes well!

However, it would be worth the check Kitty's skin for bacterial infection or ringworm as the skin should not peel off like this. Please, take Kitty back to your vet as he will likely need antibiotic / anti-fungal ointment. Your vet will probably want to examine the skin scrapes under the microscope or take a skin swab to confirm the diagnosis first.

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If the fungal infection is ringworm, it can take weeks to months to fully resolve. Many times treating the environment as well as the cat is needed. Keep Mia indoors may make it easier to contain the infection and prevent reinfection. The vet can look at hairs under the microscope or try to culture the fungus from Mia to assess if she still has it. Antifungal medication (most likely a topical ointment based on itraconazole or similar) is required. Your vet can prescribe that when diagnosis has been correctly established by some skin testing for ringworm. Hello. With lesions on or near the mouth, the easiest way to treat ringworm is with one of several antifungal medications that Maho will take by mouth. Anything topical, as you said, may be licked off, & because ringworm is contagious to other pets & people, you want to eliminate the organism as quickly as possible.
