Why is my cat still drowsy and her tail limp after sedation?

Yes that could be a side effect from the sedation. If so, the movement will come back as soon as she is no longer groggy and feeling the effects of the sedation. It is also possible that she sprained her tail. Often times when this happens the tail will just "hang" down. Again, it will resolve with time (about 5-7 days). Have you felt the whole tail to see if there is any swelling or pain? If not, I suggest you do that to see if there is pain. If there is pain then it is more likley . an injury and not from the sedation. If you are really worried about the tail I suggest you call your vet and ask them since they have access to her medical history (like what drugs they used for sedation, etc). Hope this helps.

Depending on the sedation used, it can be normal for it to take some cats closer to 12-24 hours to really be back to their normal selves. However, you should be seeing a slow, steady improvement in Mano's perkiness and responsiveness. If you are worried that it's taking too long for him to come around, I'd definitely recommend giving your vet a call (I'm assuming the groomer is associated with a vet if sedation was used) to describe what you're seeing and ask if it's concerning to them with respect to the sedation they used. After 5 hours I would not be worried if he was still a bit groggy and choose to sleep when undisturbed, but if you interact with him, he should be responsive. So, what you're seeing might be normal and appropriate, but it's definitely best to err on the side of caution and make sure you get input from someone who is familiar with the specific sedation used. I would recommend having her seen by the veterinarian that performed the ultrasound for a recheck. If after 48 hours my patients are still sedated and not feeling well after I give them sedatives in the hospital, I want to see them for a physical examination just to make sure everything is ok. Every dog is different and depending on the sedatives used, could cause sedation for days after the drugs were given. My own dog used to take 72 hours to recover from a morphine injection so I have been in the same position as you. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It is common for animals to experience nausea post-surgery, especially if it is an abdominal surgery or strong pain medications are used. If you are giving any medications, I would stop for 24 hours and notify the veterinarian that you are stopping the medications to see if Stella improves. If you are giving something such as Buprenex for post operative pain control, this particular drug can cause nausea, vomiting, shaking, lethargy, etc. If she is not improved within 24 hours, then I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hi and thanks for posting. I am sorry to hear Charlie is not feeling well. The hard spot on the incision site may be a tissue reaction to the suture material used and is not a cause for concern as it will go away on its own. However, the lethargy does sound concerning to me. There are a variety of causes for lethargy in cats and it is hard to say what exactly the issue with Charlie is without examining her first. I would without food from her tonight (she can have water) and keep her warm overnight. Tomorrow, if she is still lethargic and not herself, please take her into see her veterinarian. Poor girl. Cats typically recover from sedation within 12-24 hrs. Also they generally will still want to eat, even if its just a little bit. Try offering her some canned cat food or canned tuna to try an entice her to eat. If she got fluids yesterday, then she likely isn't thirsty yet. If she isn't herself by tomorrow, then its best to have her re-examined by your vet or get a second opinion. Her thyroid condition alone should not cause her to be quite this ill, so there may be something else going on here. I do hope that Meg is able to return to normal soon! Best wishes and take care.

Sometimes it can take some time for cats to recover from anesthesia and administration of these medications together so that could be a reason why it has been taking him longer than expected to recover. If he is eating and otherwise doing well, it may be ok to monitor him for a bit longer.
