My 15-year-old cat is lethargic and won't eat after sedation.

Hello, sorry to hear about Lir. It sounds like she could be suffering from unregulated hyperthyroidism if her Vidalta is not having a good effect or she could be dealing with underlying kidney disease. If she continues to be inappetent or develops vomiting, diarrhea, and severe lethargy then she may need to be evaluated by her veterinarian again. This to have repeat bloodwork and make sure that her hyperthyroidism is well regulated and that she does not have underlying kidney disease. Hope this helps and best of luck.

With older cats, it sometimes can take a couple of days for them to recover from anesthesia, depending on the medications that were used. Did Squeak have any bloodwork run before his procedure? If he had an underlying kidney or liver issue, it could explain some of the signs that you are seeing now. If he is still on pain medications for his tooth extraction, it could also be that he is weak if the medication is affecting him strongly. If he hasn't had bloodwork done, I would recommend checking his liver and kidney function, as well as screening for diabetes, all of which could be adversely affecting him. Additionally, there are appetite stimulants for cats that can be given post-surgery to help kickstart them into eating normally again. I would recommend Squeak be re-evaluated by his veterinarian and have any testing done that may be necessary to start treatment to get him back on track. Good luck!

Blood work was not performed prior to the sedation and if there is a pre-existing condition, the anesthesia may have made the condition worse and more pronounced. I would also consider a fructosamine test to check and see if the level is consistent with diabetes. I would say that the ultrasound is the next appropriate diagnostic test to have performed with what is going on. I hope this helps better determine what the cause could be. While sedation or anesthesia can result in gastrointestinal upset and inappetence, it usually does not last 5 days so I am worried that there may be something else going on. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Button evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. I'm not sure how long ago Xenon was spayed, and while you would expect some lethargy and decreased appetite the first 24-48 hours after surgery, the cat should start to perk up after that time. If it's been 48 hours since her surgery and she is acting this way, I'd take her into a vet now to get checked out. Best of luck.

I'm sorry to hear that Cleo isn't eating as well as she normal does. Hyperthyroidism typically causes weight loss despite an increase in appetite, although rare cats may experience a decreased appetite. The change in Cleo's appetite alone may or may not be associated with hyperthyroidism. Other causes of this sudden lack of interest in food and lethargy could be related to a gastrointestinal virus, kidney disease, parasites, liver disease, among many other conditions. If she still isn't eating normally in the next day or two, Cleo should go to her vet for evaluation and likely blood testing. However, if she becomes experiences extreme lethargy, experiences profuse vomiting or diarrhea, or will not drink water, Cleo should go to the vet immediately. I would monitor her for the next 24 hours and if the vomiting worsens I would take her back in but if she does not vomit but is lethargic and weak, this should resolve. I hope this helps!
