If Sooty is drooling when he's sitting on you or relaxed, this drooling could be caused by a state of extreme relaxation. When cats become very relaxed, their jaw muscles will relax as well and drool can come out. When I was growing up, I had a cat that drooled whenever she sat on your lap. You would inevitably end up with a huge wet patch on your lap! It could also be caused by a dental problem such as a broken tooth or abscess, so I would have Sooty seen by a vet for a health check. It's not likely the drooling is caused by rabies, so there's no worry there :-)
