Can I use leftover Metacam from my spayed dog for my neutered dog?

Meloxicam can be used in cats but with caution. Giving the wrong dose of meloxicam can be very dangerous for cats. The low dose (0.5 mg/ml) formula can be dosed with the provided syringe. In the cat this product is given either as a single one time injection in association with surgery (its FDA approved use) or long term 2-3 times per week (its non-U.S. dose). Long term use of this product in cats is "off label" in the U.S. In my opinion, there is a specific NSAID made for cats called Onsior that would be safer to give.

Tramadol and metacam can be given together. They are 2 different drugs with different mechanisms of action and different side effects. Metacam has a very narrow dose whereas tramadol has a wider, safer dose range. Metacam is an NSAID and can cause a variety of side effects, most notably gi ulceration and kidney injury. Dosing of both should be provided by your vet based on your pets health history and bloodwork. Monitoring of bloodwork is very important with metacam use. No, you cannot give her any more metacam today as she already got it by Injection at the end of the surgery and this medication can only be given once a day. Try to keep her on a soft surface with a gentle bedding, try offering her treats and keep her occupied with very gentle playing. Tomorrow she will already feel much better.

A one time early dose is unlikely to be problematic, but I would recommend that you don’t redose for at least another 24 hours. If she seems comfortable than you can wait for 36 hours and use the gabapentin. Monitor for any signs of nausea, vomiting, or dark tarry stools. I'm sorry to hear that Axel is having this problem! It won't hurt anything if you want to give the Metacam a few hours early (such as at 8 pm instead of midnight), but I would not give another dose in the morning so close together. If you would rather dose him in the morning, then it would be best to skip tonight's dose altogether, then start once daily dosing tomorrow morning instead.

Since this was not quite double the appropriate dose your dog should be ok. Do not give another dose for at least 48 hours. Make sure Evie has access to plenty of fresh water. It is OK that you gave it 2 hours early but I personally don't recommend multiple days of Metacam administration in cats. I suggest you stop giving it at this point unless she seems painful. After a week she should not be.
