My cat has diarrhea and tarry stool; could it be panleukopenia?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 2 days old | 0.8 lbs

The two cats we've taken from the street have been diarrhea for about three days . A cat died due to cat panleukonemia .Antibiotic treatment of the living cat was started. But today the animal's stool looks like tar or blood coagulated .It also consumes a liquid as a cat's immune booster . The vet gave me this liquid. There's no open veterinarian in the country I live in . I'd like to know your views or your diagnosis

I'm so sorry but it is impossible for us to diagnose over the internet. My best guess though is that panleukopenia is definitely a possibility in this cat. Especially since it had contact with the infected cat. Hopefully, this cat will respond to treatment.

I suggest you continue all the treatment your vet gave you and add in a probiotic if you can get one. I'm not sure what is available in Turkey but one made for cats would be best. This should help the diarrhea.

It would be ideal for this cat to be in the hospital on intravenous fluids and get a plasma transfusion as well (if blood testing shows low white blood cell count that is characteristic of panluekopenia).

My cat has panleukopenia. What care and prevention steps are needed?

I am not sure if you mean to prevent other cats from getting sick or your cat from getting worse. I would recommend vaccinating all cats That come in contact with the sick cat. They should have 1 vaccine and than boostered 3-4 weeks later. Unfortunately for the sick cat panleukopenia is fatal. You can try supportive measures like iv fluids , antibiotics, probiotics and even a blood transfusion depending on illness level of the cat.

Animals vaccinated with a live vaccine can develop mild symptoms and shedding for a short while in the minority of cases, but inactive vaccines would not have this effect. There are many possible causes of viral and bacterial diarrhea and i would recommend testing stools parvo in affected cases if you are concerned

It's possible, but the panleukopenia virus, although from the same genus as the Parvo virus, is not exactly the same so he didn't catch him from your dog. nevertheless you need to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated ASAP.

My kitten has severe panleukopenia. How can I help him survive?

I am so sorry to hear about Toffee! Unfortunately, panleukopenia virus is a nasty disease and many kittens do not survive. That being said, you do not need fancy medicine for it since it is a virus. The most important thing is keeping up with the hydration. Repeating iv fluids under the skin can help with this (ask your vet if s/he can teach you how, how much, how often.) Getting an antibiotic (oral or shot) is also important since Toffee’s immune system is very weak. Feed tiny amounts feequently is he is not vomiting. Sadly, even though we do all these things, many kittens do not survive. Best of luck to you and Toffee.

Kitten recovered from parvo, now has runny stool. Can she get it again?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luna! She has been through a lot. No she shouldn’t get panleukopenia again. Cats tend to have protective immunity after infection. If she is still on medications they may be causing an upset stomach. Be sure your vet dewormed her. I would start a probiotic like Purina Fortifkora and call your vet. I’d ask for a prescription intestinal diet like hill’s i/d or royal canin gastro-intestinal. Discuss stopping or temporarily stopping any oral medications she maybe on and see if they want to see her or prescribe something over the phone. Hopefully this is just a small hiccup.
