My cat has panleukopenia. What care and prevention steps are needed?

Poor Tom. You can try to give him a chance with the vet, as cats who survive for five days with this have a much greater chance of recovery. In most cases, once a cat recovers from FP, it will not infect other cats through direct contact, but some recovered cats can shed the virus in their stool and urine for up to 6 weeks. Make sure your cat is vaccinated against it. If he does survive, no he may not always be a risk to other cats and he may not need long time treatment.

At this point, it will not help to vaccinate the other cats because they've already been exposed to the virus - all it would do, would be to weaken their immune system. It won't provide protection quickly enough to be of any use. I agree that cleaning and disinfecting the house is a good idea, as well as keeping the infected cat isolated from the others. In 2-3 weeks, you could talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating the other cats if they still aren't showing any symptoms.

A high calorie liquid diet such as viyo recuperation or royal canin gastrointestinal liquid diets are the easiest for her to digest when recovering, as well as oral electrolyte (salt and sugar solutions) which can be offered for her to drink or syringe fed. If the vomiting is still persistent she will require injectable fluids and nausea medications by your vet

Oh goodness that is concerning. You said you had her checked out. Hopefully she was vaccinated at that time as well, if not then she should be vaccinated immediately . Panleukopenia is included in the core feline vaccines. She should be boostered 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine and then again until she is about 16 weeks old. Feline parvo, also called panleukopenia, can be spread through the stool, urine, or nasal secretions of affected kittens. I'm glad you kept the kittens separated when they were both in your care. I would make sure you do not let your heathy kitten use any of the bowls, blankets, beds, or litter pans the sick kitten came in contact with. You can clean these items with diluted bleach. Also clean surfaces the sick kitten came in contact with similarly. Signs to watch for include lethargy, diarrhea and poor appetite. I am so sorry to hear about Toffee! Unfortunately, panleukopenia virus is a nasty disease and many kittens do not survive. That being said, you do not need fancy medicine for it since it is a virus. The most important thing is keeping up with the hydration. Repeating iv fluids under the skin can help with this (ask your vet if s/he can teach you how, how much, how often.) Getting an antibiotic (oral or shot) is also important since Toffee’s immune system is very weak. Feed tiny amounts feequently is he is not vomiting. Sadly, even though we do all these things, many kittens do not survive. Best of luck to you and Toffee.

I'm so sorry but it is impossible for us to diagnose over the internet. My best guess though is that panleukopenia is definitely a possibility in this cat. Especially since it had contact with the infected cat. Hopefully, this cat will respond to treatment. I suggest you continue all the treatment your vet gave you and add in a probiotic if you can get one. I'm not sure what is available in Turkey but one made for cats would be best. This should help the diarrhea. It would be ideal for this cat to be in the hospital on intravenous fluids and get a plasma transfusion as well (if blood testing shows low white blood cell count that is characteristic of panluekopenia).
