Kitten vomiting. Is Panleukopenia diagnosis accurate from blood test?

Panleukopenia is a feline parvovirus. They don't make a direct test for it but most clinics use the canine parvovirus test to get a result. False positives are very rare, occurring only in about 0-6% of tested samples. Vaccine induced positives are also rare with about only 1/64 recently vaccinated kittens testing positive. This is with the IDEXX brand test. Other brands had a higher rate of positive results following vaccination. So, without more information as to what test your vet used and how long ago she was vaccinated and with what vaccine (if she was even vaccinated) it is difficult for me to say much on the subject. If an IDEXX test was used I would trust the result. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This is only a CBC test result. The white count is low and it is mostly low from not enough lymphocytes. My suspicion would be a virus or cancer. Viral infections are the most common cause of a low white blood cell count in cats. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) are two such viruses. These viruses invade the white blood cells and use them to make copies of themselves, increasing the virus’ strength and reducing the number of white blood cells. Other possibilities include: * Bacterial infections. These infections can range from abscesses to respiratory infections to sepsis. Essentially, any infection or inflammation causes a drop in white blood cells, particularly neutrophils. HER DROP IS LYMPHOCYTES, not neutrophils so I think this is less likely. * Bone marrow diseases, or the panleukopenia virus, which destroys the marrow where white blood cells are produced. * Pancreatitis. The inflammation of the pancreas will draw white blood cells from the bloodstream, lowering their count. * Certain medications. Corticosteroids can actually suppress the production of white blood cells. THIS IS WHY I DON'T AGREE WITH THE STEROID ADMINISTRATION AT THIS TIME. Antibiotics, yes. Steroids, no. Just my opinion though. I can't really say your vet is wrong. This is just not what I would do especially since she is not responding. More testing needs to be done: * repeat the CBC to see where the white count is now * chemistry panel to check liver, kidneys, etc * FeLV/FIV testing * FIP (corona virus) testing * pancreatitis test Hope this helps. I'm so sorry but it is impossible for us to diagnose over the internet. My best guess though is that panleukopenia is definitely a possibility in this cat. Especially since it had contact with the infected cat. Hopefully, this cat will respond to treatment. I suggest you continue all the treatment your vet gave you and add in a probiotic if you can get one. I'm not sure what is available in Turkey but one made for cats would be best. This should help the diarrhea. It would be ideal for this cat to be in the hospital on intravenous fluids and get a plasma transfusion as well (if blood testing shows low white blood cell count that is characteristic of panluekopenia). There is a chance given the symptoms that this could be panleucopaenia, a highly contagious viral gastroenteritis in cats related to parvo virus in dogs. I would recommend testing at least one affected cat as if positive vaccines can help protect the others. Fluids and anti nausea medications can help

A lower wbc in the aftermath of panleuc infection would not be uncommon but it would be expected to rise over 4-6weeks as he recovers, as should the hgb. I recommend keeping him isolated as far as possible from other cats as he recuperates as he would be prone to catching infections

If Mochi truly had Panleukopenia Virus this spring, then it is extremely unlikely he would ever get it again. However, that doesn't mean he couldn't get some other virus or bacteria that could cause vomiting and diarrhea. If you changed his diet before the vomiting and diarrhea started, then it may be the food switch. You may have changed foods too suddenly and caused an upset stomach, or Mochi may have a dietary intolerance of food allergy to the new food. Other possible causes for diarrhea and vomiting include stress colitis, IBD, GI blockage, intestinal parasites, among a few other things. If the vomiting and diarrhea persist for longer than 24 hours, or if Mochi develops a poor appetite or lethargy, then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

I am so sorry to hear about Toffee! Unfortunately, panleukopenia virus is a nasty disease and many kittens do not survive. That being said, you do not need fancy medicine for it since it is a virus. The most important thing is keeping up with the hydration. Repeating iv fluids under the skin can help with this (ask your vet if s/he can teach you how, how much, how often.) Getting an antibiotic (oral or shot) is also important since Toffee’s immune system is very weak. Feed tiny amounts feequently is he is not vomiting. Sadly, even though we do all these things, many kittens do not survive. Best of luck to you and Toffee.
