My cat has diarrhea and gas. What GI food can help her feel better?

I would recommend a Rx hypoallergenic diet, because they are super easily digestible and reduce the amount of work the body has to put out to digest the food. Also a daily probiotic would be helpful to promote healthy intestinal flora. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can try home made diet and probiotics for a week. GI distress from new food or treats generally only lasts a few days. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, or he becomes uninterested in food, I'd recommend taking him to see his vet for a physical exam.

Poor Opal. It sounds like she has an upset stomach, but this diarrhea could also be caused by intestinal worms. Make sure she is up to date with her deworming treatments, giving her one if she is not. I can also give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Poor guy. I wouldn't decrease his food for fear of malnutrition, but you should try feeding him an easily digestible bland diet until his GI flora is back to normal. Excessive gas is an indication of indigestion. Try Purina EN or have your vet prescribe Royal Canin GI low fat or Hill's Science Diet. An easily digestible food should help both the stool and the gas. You can also ask your vet for prescription cream to help with some topical relief back there. You may want to try mixing a little bit of his old food in with the new food to gradually transition him to the new food. If he still doesn’t want to eat it you could ask your vet if there are any other foods to try for his condition.

Diarrhea and a decrease in appetite could be a sign of a number of different problems. Intestinal parasites are possible, even for indoor cats, as are some infections or diseases like colitis or inflammatory bowel disease. If the diarrhea continues for more than 24 hours or seems to be getting worse, or if her appetite does not improve during that time I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. They may treat her symptoms or recommend some testing like blood work or a fecal analysis depending on what they find during a physical examination.
