My cat has dark, smelly discharge after bladder surgery. Is it normal?

IT is not uncommon fr some nasal discharge or blood - the tear ducts naturally drain down through the back of the nose/throat. If he is otherwise well I would continue to monitor - a vet check is recommended if the discharge is persistent, thick/coloured or any weight loss or fever develops

There is a chance that there was some trauma to the bladder area while removing the uterus which is located just above the cervix. Some light bleeding can be expected to occur for 1-3 days after surgery but copious amounts of blood or prolonged bleeding should be considered abnormal. I would recommend either taking your cat back to the previous veterinarian, since he/she did the surgery, for a follow-up visit for further care. Or if the trust has been broken with this vet, you can get kitty seen with another expert for an exam and potential urinalysis to ensure there isn't a UTI present that could explain the symptoms that mentioned. As long as there is an active flow of urine and no outward signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen) then this sounds like a relatively non-emergency type situation that can be hopefully be resolved with medical treatment, if any.

As your cat is spayed, it is possible that the discharge you are seeing is coming from the urethra rather than the vagina as both open up into a common vestibule in the body. Dark brown secretions may indicate blood or infection in the urine, and bringing in a sample of your cat's urine to your local vet can be used to determine if this is the case. You may see other signs of illness such as more frequent trips to the bathroom, attempting to go without success, yowling, or pain and irritation. Infections are usually treated with a round of antibiotics as well as switching to a urinary friendly diet. Increasing your cats water consumption will also help reduce further infections. In some very rare cases, part of the uterus can be left behind during a spay which may become infected. Signs of infection include swelling of the abdomen, extreme pain and lethargy, and greenish or yellow discharge in addition to other possible discharge. A dark colored discharge is completely normal and is just what accumulates near the corner of the eye. It consists of the dried discharge left from the tear film that gets deposited onto the eye and flows across the eye. Unless you notice redness and a green or yellowish discharge I wouldn't worry. A clear discharge with a lot of squinting and redness would be something to have your vet evaluate right away. Sounds like this is completely normal and is found in both normal cats and dogs. It can be normal for vaginal discharge after a pyometra surgery. The uterus is removed above the cervix. If blood and infection is present in the vaginal cavity it will still be present and leak out the vulva . If it is a small amount and Lucy is recovering normal I would not be concerned. If she is not eating, being overly painful or large amount of discharge I would recommend having her re checked by your vet.
