My cat's poop is dark green. What does this mean for her health?

This is an interesting question and I applaud you for being such an observant and caring pet owner. Fecal color can be a variety of colors depending upon the age, breed, dietary intake, or possibly disease. And yes, Green feces can sometimes be a normal finding in kittens. However, the fact that some of this tool is soft concerns me. This is not normal. In my opinion, I would make an appointment with your veterinary clinic to have a physical examination performed. At this appointment, the vet may want to run tests such as a fecal smear, Giardia test, fecal analysis, etc. just to make sure that your cat does not have any problems that are causing the soft stool. Yes, the poop is probably green because of the new food. Since it is otherwise normal and the stools are formed you have nothing to worry about. Continue to monitor Felix's stool over the next few days to make sure it does not change any further.

The green color is likely dye from something your pet ingested. I recommend monitoring the stool to see if it changes back to normal color within the next day or two .Chances are it will. Also monitor Pickles a bit more closely to make sure he isn't ingesting something he shouldn't have. If he starts to have any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or decreased appetite, then its best to have him seen by your local vet. Also, if there is any chance Pickles could have gotten into some kind of rat poison/bait, then he should be seen right away. It wouldn't be a bad idea also to go ahead and give Pickles a probiotic to support a healthy GI tract moving forward. Some options that don't require a prescription are: Culturelle (over the counter) OR Foriflora (online, Chewy.com). I hope that Pickles stool returns to normal color soon. Pale, white, or gray stools may be indicators of liver disease or intestinal bacterial infections. You may want to take a stool sample as well as your cat, if the stool does not normalize over the next few days or of your kitty appears ill. The vet may want to do blood work to make sure the liver is functioning properly. If so then it is likely that your kitty has an intestinal infection that will require antibiotics to clear up.

Stress can definitely cause changes in eating, drinking, and stool habits, however the green color makes me worry that there may be an underlying health issue as well. Green stools can sometimes indicate issues such as too-fast of transit time in the bowels (so the normal bile isn't broken down into its usual brown color), liver or gall issues, pancreas issues, illnesses caused by bacteria, or ingesting something that is greenish or dyed in color. I would offer Keanu a bland diet of some boiled chicken to see if that helps resolve the diarrhea (and give him some extra attention and care, since cats deal with loss and grief just as much as people) and continue to monitor his stools. If the diarrhea or strange stool colors continue, bringing Keanu and a sample of his stool to your vet is a good idea to rule out more serious issues.

Vomiting is sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. Given Leia's young age and the fact that she is otherwise doing fine, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing her diet to something that she can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing her diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. Intestinal bleeding can be caused by ulcers, parasites, or conditions such as IBD. This changes the color of the stool due to products of blood digestion, which are black to dark green in color. Kidney conditions can cause gastric ulcers as certain toxic compounds build up in the body and alter acid production of the stomach.
