My cat is coughing, hunched, lethargic, and lost her meow. What to do?

It could be that Serenity has a respiratory infection, but what really concerns me is that she is having a hard time breathing. That could easily lead to respiratory distress and potentially death. Because of this, I think she needs to see a vet now to be safe. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Mittens has been vomiting and is now coughing. Cats can vomit for a number of reasons, including trying to vomit a hairball, eating something they shouldn't have, gastrointestinal obstruction, infection, inflammation, or even cancer. From the information you provided, my concern is that Mittens may have aspirated (taken fluid into the lungs) during one of these vomiting episodes, and is now coughing as a result. Aspiration pneumonia can be a scary thing in cats, and especially if Mittens is not acting himself or wanting to eat, I would recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to be examined. If your veterinarian determines that he has abnormal lung sounds, he/she may recommend blood work and chest x-rays to look for evidence of pneumonia. If present, they will likely start Mittens on some antibiotics. There are other possibilities for Mitten's cough including bronchitis or an upper airway infection, which should also be managed by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

She could have an infection or asthma causing the cough and wheeze so she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate her heart and lungs and then prescribe medications to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and/or a bronchodilator to help with the cough and wheeze. Your vet can also check her teeth to make sure she doesn't have a dental problem.

I am sorry to hear about Cali's current state. With her being a two month old cat, the most likely cause of her current symptoms by far is an upper respiratory infection. These are usually bacterial and/or viral in origin. Typically they require antibiotics, ophthalmic medications, and immunoboosters to resolve the issue. If she is having trouble breathing, the infection could be advanced and she might benefit from supplemental oxygen. While I can't physically see her right now, I would not recommend waiting until morning if you are truly seeing episodes of labored breathing. Cats have a way of exciting themselves more and more when they have difficulty breathing and can have disastrous consequences quickly if it goes untreated. Give a call to your local emergency hospital and describe to them what you are seeing. Once you tell them there is a respiratory element to the issue, I believe they will offer you the same advise.

It could be laryngitis from an upper respiratory infection. Usually, the symptoms will go away within 10 days or so. I am sorry to hear about Luna. Since she is lethargic and has a decreased appetite, I would recommend she have an examination by her vet. She may have an upper respiratory infection that requires treatment, and reasons we recommend veterinary care include lethargy, decreased appetite, trouble breathing, coughing. Poor girl. You will need to take her to the vet for this. If she swallowed something that she shouldn’t have, it may have gone down her trachea instead of her esophagus , which is why she has a cough. The vet needs to listen to her lungs using a stethoscope and possibly even do chicest radiographs on her to evaluate her lungs. I recommend scheduling an appt right away.
