My 2-month-old kitten is coughing, sneezing, breathing hard. What now?

Unfortunately kittens are susceptible to many viruses that infect the respiratory tract and can cause noise, running eyes and noses and general ill health. There is little to do for a virus aside from administering antinflammatories which you would need to have prescribed by a vet. However I would recommend taking the kitten in for an exam as the viruses can make way for bacterial infection and the vet can give antibiotics if needed. In the mean time keep the kitten in stress and draught free environment.

It could be an upper respiratory infection caused by a virus or bacteria or could be evidence of feline asthma, a heart condition, or other lung, airway, or cardiovascular conditions. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to help evaluate the heart and lungs further and may recommend antibiotics or other medications as needed. what the staff at the shelter told you is true about the possibility of forming respiratory issues due to stress. the symptoms that you are describing are indeed symptoms of a respiratory infection and antibiotics are needed. The coughing you are hearing likely has no connection to a hairball issue and is likely the infection progressing. My best recommendation to you would be to have them seen by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience to have them treated before their illness progresses into something worse than the "simple kitty cold"
