My cat has clumpy, smelly poop days after neutering. What to do?

It is possible that he could have had a reaction to the anesthesia or just the stress of being neutered. Or it could be completely coincidental and it could be secondary to something else like parasites, foreign body, a sudden change in food, pancreatitis, an underlying infection, and much more. I would try to feed him some plain boiled boneless and skinless chicken and white rice. I would also try to start him on some probiotics. Your vet should be able to provide these or give you some recommendations. You can try some plain sugar free yogurt but the probiotics in this isn't as good as the cat probiotics because we have different bacteria in our gut than in cats. The next step should be to have him re-examined and likely have some bloodwork done. I would also make sure the vet has ruled out an parasites including giardia which is difficult to find on a regular fecal test. If your vet doesn't think there is a foreign body, they will be able to provide him with a good anti-nausea medicine to help with the vomiting. I hope this helps!

I recommend withholding food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. It could be due to the anti-inflammatory/pain contro medications he was on or even stress from the procedure. Monitor him closely for now. Hello. Sorry to hear about Shiloh's stomach trouble. Going to the vet can be stressful, which can cause early upset, and then eating a lot all at once can upset the gi tract further. I would call your vet and get some medications for diarrhea, but in the meantime you can feed him and tablespoon of yogurt every couple hours and small amounts of food. Try and rest his gut a little until you can get medications.

It is possible the hairball caused the vomiting and some digestive upset. I would continue to monitor Snaer, and see how he does over time and if his appetite returns. If he doesn't return to normal within 24 hours, vomits more, stops eating, or seems painful in his abdomen, bringing him back to your vet for more care is best. You can also try a bland meal or two of plain, boiled chicken (or a little added to his regular food) to help settle his stomach and entice him to eat.

It would be highly unusual for a kitten to have urinary complications after neutering. You are a good pet parent for monitoring him, but as long as he is interacting with you, interested in food, and is doing normal cat behaviors such as grooming I wouldn’t worry yet. If he’s repeatedly getting into and out of the litter box without producing anything, if he starts vocalizing in the box, or if there is bloody discharge from the surgical area take him right in.
