What to do if my cat makes a choking sound while eating his food?

It may be that George is eating too quickly. You could try getting a treat toy and putting his food in there so that he only gets a few kibbles out at a time. However, it could be something more serious. You may want to try to get a video of this behavior, and then have George examined by a vet. He could have a respiratory infection, trouble breathing due to heart or lung disease, a stricture in his esophagus, a nasopharyngeal polyp, or something else that is making it hard for him to eat or swallow.

Feeding our pets is often a tough love situation. Many cats simply do not stop eating when they have consumed a sufficient amount of food, so it is up to us to only provide them with proper portions. Since Obe has not lost weight, he is consuming an appropriate amount of food. However, there are some ways that you can try to slow down his pace of eating. Try spreading his wet food over a large surface area (such as a baking sheet) or put small amounts of his wet food into different sections of a muffin tin so that he has to work for his food more. Other puzzle toys (here are some ideas for homemade ones: https://www.purina.com/articles/cat/feeding/diy-cat-puzzle-feeder) can be useful in feeding wet food, just as they are for dry food. The baby powder size months ago likely doesn’t have anything to do with Leo’s choking episodes now, especially if they just started. Choking after drinking water can indicate that he is drinking too fast, or there is a smal chance he could have a laryngeal issue (i.e. laryngeal paralysis); however this condition usually causes the pet to have a continuous cough, even when not drinking water. At any rate, if the coughing does become continuous then it’s best to get Leo seen by your vet right away. If the cough is strictly isolated to drinking water, then I would recommend a water fountain to perhaps slow him down and prevent him from choking. Otherwise he should be fine. I hope this helps. Try feeding smaller, more frequent meals. If Smokey eats fast, try a 'slow feed' bowl to address the issue. Sometimes, switching to a canned food may help. If the vomiting persists or worsens, have him examined by your veterinarian.

Do you have time to run out to a pet store and get a timed feeding bowl? This will release a specific amount of food at set times, and will keep Nala from overeating. You can also put her food into a muffin tin, dividing it equally among the 12 tins. This will also force her to slow down eating and may allow her to get full quicker. You can look into getting a different slow feeder. Also, you can consider basically throwing her food (kibble) in a room which is going to spread it out and Jackie will have to eat it more slowly.
