My cat chews plastic and eats sweets. Is this safe or normal?

Some cats chew on it because they like the taste and texture in their mouth. This can be a concern because if the cat eats it, it can cause a foreign body. When I was in college, I had a cat eat the plastic streamers from a pom pom, and she had to have emergency surgery. I would keep Sasha from doing this. I hope this helps!

Cats tend to enjoy chewing on things, such as plastics, boxes, etc. It would be best to keep Ella away from any plastic bits she may accidentally eat, and distract her with other toys and treats as needed. If she does eat some plastic, vet care is best.

Hi there! Sammy sounds like such a fun and frisky kitty cat. I am not really sure why cats like things like paper or scotch tape so much, but assume it's because of the crinkly sounds that they make when they play with those types of objects. As with all foreign material though, cats really shouldn't be actually ingesting the tape or paper. They could definitely cause some stomach upset. Even pieces of toys, if swallowed, can get caught on the way through the gastrointestinal tract and cause lots of serious problems. I have even seen a cat have several ponytail hair-ties removed from its tummy after swallowing them! It sounds like you two play together a lot, which is great, so if Sammy has a tendency to chew his toys and other things into pieces and potentially eat them, I would keep everything out of reach unless you are home and can supervise. This may be a normal behavior for Sky but I would recommend you find a safer chew toy for her. My biggest concern is that she would ingest a piece of the plastic which could cause GI distress and/or a blockage. If Sky starts chewing on other inappropriate items, is vomiting or having diarrhea, or goes off her food, I would recommend you take her in to your veterinarian to be examined. I hope this helps. Eating of litter and other objects, also called pica, can be a sign of underlying nutrient deficiencies or health problems. This is really common in cats. It's called "pica." There isn't a way to treat it, though. The best thing is to keep all of the objects that Sampson likes to eat picked up and out of his reach. Make sure he has plenty of toys to occupy his time and prevent boredom. Look for puzzle toys. You can even use the puzzle toys to feed him his meals. It's common for young animals to chew on and sometimes swallow things that they shouldn't, just like human toddlers. The best thing to do is keep small items that might be accidentally swallowed away from your kitten, until he is older and has stopped this behavior.
