My cat has brown discharge under his tail. Vet visit needed?

This could be mucus in his stool or possibly material from his anal glands. If he is behaving normally, you can offer a bland diet for a few days and minimize stress as much as possible. If the discharge worsens or if Napoleon becomes lethargic, develops diarrhea, stops eating or starts vomiting, then you should have him examined by your veterinarian. This looks most like a sebaceous cyst which is a benign cyst that can rupture or get infected from time to time. However, there are other things that this could be that are not benign. Just to be safe, I’d see the vet for a better examination. He or she may recommend a cytology (poking the mass with a slim needle and looking at the cells under the microscope) to determine if it needs to be removed or just monitored. In an unspayed cat I would worry about pyometra, an infection in the uterus. This can be a very serious, life threatening condition that needs to be evaluated and treated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If there is an emergency clinic near your home I would consider bringing Ellie in to be examined. If there is no way to get to a veterinarian before Monday I would watch Ellie very closely for any changes in activity level, appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, water intake, urination, etc. so you can give your veterinarian as much helpful information as possible when you arrive. There are, of course, other reasons for discharge around the hind end (such as dried diarrhea, expressed anal gland discharge, flea "dirt", among other things), I cannot rule any of these out without diagnostic tests. That could typically be due either to anal gland infection/inflammation or diarrhoea with liquid feces. A check up is necessary if the signs are not resolving, despite a change in the dietary regime (bland diet with chicken and rice for the next 3-4 days). Antibiotics and anal gland expression may be needed.

I would be concerned that Miss kitty has a uterus infection if the discharge is from her vulva. A urinary tract infection can present the same way too. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure nothing more severe is going on.

I think the clear discharge could be mucous that she has in her colon from the diarrhea. It sounds like you are doing all the best things for Phoebe, but I am concerned that she may have other intestinal parasites that are not treated by roundworm dewormer, like coccidia, tapeworms, whipworms, or giardia, or maybe a bacterial or viral infection. I would recommend a checkup with a vet. Take a fresh fecal sample with you to the appointment so the vet can test for other intestinal parasites (a little bit of litter on the feces is ok!). Until the appointment, you can clean her hind end with a warm wet wash cloth and apply a small amount of Neosporin to help with the irritation caused by diarrhea.

Hello, sorry to hear about Comet. It sounds like he has an abscessed area wether at the tail or anus. Some pets may develop impacted anal glands that become infected and turn into anal gland abscesses. I would recommend having Comet evaluated by a veterinarian as this infection will need to be treated with antibiotics and the area will need to be cleaned. I hope this helps and best of luck.
