My cat has a lump on its tail with brown discharge. Is it serious?

Hi. This appears to be a cyst based on the photo,but hard to say for sure without an exam. These can form in the dermal layer from an over production of oils sebaceous material. This may not be correct based on a photo so I would make an appointment

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I understand your concern! It is hard to tell exactly what a skin mass is by just looking at it. You need either to biopsy or aspirate it for a definitive diagnosis. With that being said the bump on Kajoor appears to resemble a sebaceous adenoma. Which is more common in dogs. I would consider removing to for biopsy. If it is <8mm and Kajoor is a calm cat your Vet could consider removing it with a local block of lidcaine and a punch biopsy device. It is difficult to diagnose without seeing the bump but it could be an infection, cyst, mass, or an injury. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at it to determine the exact cause and best way to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications to treat. Your vet can do a needle aspirate, if necessary, to help diagnose the cause of the bump.

If he is otherwise normal I would continue to monitor the litter box as well as his thirst and appetite for any other indications of gastroenteritis. A probiotic and bland diet would be recommended as a precautions, as well as an oral deworming medication if not given in the last 3 months

Hello, it does not look like a poxvirus lesion. Additionally, poxvirus generally is a virus of young patients. That looks like it could be more a sebaceous cyst or even a small tumor. I would monitor it for any changes in appearance or size and if you note any then you should have your veterinarian evaluate your cat immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Mammary growths in cats have a high chance of being a malignant cancer. Since they are open and draining, they may also be infected It would be best to have a vet check the area to see if surgery is an option to remove them or at least medication to help clean them and clear the infection. Peroxide can actually delay healing after the first use. You are safer with mild soap and water to wipe it clean

The lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Alex to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.
