Foster kitten with broken pelvis: Bladder expression, pain, & healing?

I am about to take on a foster kitten with a broken pelvis. His bladder needs expression and I'm wondering if it will hurt him when I do it? Also what are the chances he will be able to go on his own again ever? And how long on cage rest does a typical pelvic fracture take to heal? Hes only about 5 weeks old

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Manual bladder expression typically does not hurt if done properly. If you search on youtube, there are some useful videos that veterinary clinics publish on how to manually express bladders. As long as there was no irreversible damage done to the nerves of the bladder, he will likely be able to urinate on his own again in the future once everything heals. At 5 weeks old, he is young so healing will be fast. I usually say about 4-6 weeks for healing time for a bone fracture in a young animal. Pelvic fractures that are unstable in a young animal may take longer. You have to remember that there is nothing stabilizing the fractures so any motion of the fractured bones will delay healing. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can purchase water-less shampoo and bath his hind end. And yes you can pick him up and snuggle. Just do not put him down. To ensure proper healing follow your Vet's recommendations and have him rechecked for X-rays to be sure he is healing properly. It worries me a bit that he can't urinate on his own. That shouldn't be an issue. I would have an X-ray taken at 4 weeks. Good luck!

How do I care for my cat with a broken pelvis after discharge?

I'm so glad Allie can pee now and can be discharged tomorrow! He will need to rest to heal his broken pelvis. This means confinement to a crate or a small room to limit his movement at all times. No going outside, no playing, no running, no jumping. Make sure the crate is big enough for a bed, litter box, food, and water. He will need to be on strict cage rest for at least six weeks. Not following this could damage his pelvic healing and potentially cause problems with his bladder again. I hope this helps.

Cat hit by car, can't pee. Are kidneys okay with a pelvic fracture?

The fracture in the pelvis can affect the nerves to the bladder, making him unable to pee. Because there was urine produced, yes it does mean Allie's kidneys are still working, it just may be that his nerves innervating his bladder have been damaged with the fracture pelvis. Kitten with fractured pelvis: Is sudden crying and biting due to pain?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. My guess would be pain. Any little tweak or trying to move too fast could be exruciating. I'm sure it goes without saying but a fractured pelvis is extremely painful and he should be on probably at least two pain medications given 2-3 times daily. If he is on less than that, talk to your vet about adding something on. (Even if he is on two, ask if another might be indicated.) Best wishes to you and the little guy.

My cat peeing less after spay, is her bladder recovering well?

Hello. I am so sorry that no one has addressed your question sooner. It is difficult to predict how the accidental tear in Belladonna's urinary bladder will affect her in the future. Most bladder tears, or cuts from incisions, heal very well, & very quickly, so I really do not expect there to be long term problems. However, I am a little alarmed that your veterinarian did not disclose that the urinary bladder was nicked during her spay surgery. That sends up a bit of a red flag about their ethics. As long as Belladonna is urinating, I would not be as concerned about the volume as most likely she is adequately emptying her bladder. My cat has a broken pelvis. Can she heal naturally or need surgery?

Poor girl. This is severe break and the pieces are not at all aligned. Unfortunately because the two bones are not aligned properly to heal back together naturally, this likely needs surgical correction. Poor kitty. : ( I recommend discussing with the vet about surgery for this poor kitty to help align the bones. I am not an orthopedic surgeon however, so a consult is needed to discuss if this particular break is repairable surgically or if there are other things that need to be done. My dog was hit by a car. How to help his broken pelvis heal and walk?

Hello. I am so sorry about Ponpon's injuries. Without seeing an x-ray, I can only surmise that the fractures are to the pelvic bones. It is very difficult to try & surgically repair the fractured pieces & especially in such a young pup, we often just leave them to heal on their own. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for complete healing, but Ponpon may be up & walking sooner. It is important to restrict his activity. He should stay in one area, preferably a large enough crate that gives him the room to stand, turn around & stretch out comfortably. He should only be walked on a leash & use a towel or hip lift support harness to assist him. With time, hopefully he will make a full recovery.
