Kitten with fractured pelvis: Is sudden crying and biting due to pain?

Hello, its difficult to assess if he will recover from this injury as there are no x-rays to evaluate. If his does have a fractured back, and currently is unable to move legs then his prognosis for recovery may not be great without surgery. Buprenorphine is great pain medication for cats. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Manual bladder expression typically does not hurt if done properly. If you search on youtube, there are some useful videos that veterinary clinics publish on how to manually express bladders. As long as there was no irreversible damage done to the nerves of the bladder, he will likely be able to urinate on his own again in the future once everything heals. At 5 weeks old, he is young so healing will be fast. I usually say about 4-6 weeks for healing time for a bone fracture in a young animal. Pelvic fractures that are unstable in a young animal may take longer. You have to remember that there is nothing stabilizing the fractures so any motion of the fractured bones will delay healing. To ensure proper healing follow your Vet's recommendations and have him rechecked for X-rays to be sure he is healing properly. It worries me a bit that he can't urinate on his own. That shouldn't be an issue. I would have an X-ray taken at 4 weeks. Good luck!

Yes, i would be afraid that he may have broken his pelvis or damaged his bladder - a full physical exam and possibly xrays would be recommended in order to determine the extent of his injuries and prescribe the most appropriate treatment

It's hard to know what's going on with him without seeing the xrays and knowing which pain medications your cat is on. Hopefully there is an opiate on-board like a long-acting buprenorphine injection to help appropriately with the pain. Usually with adequate pain medication cats will start eating after an injury if there is no other issue like kidney disease or a ruptured bladder (like from trauma). If he has not had bloodwork and a urine test done, I recommend these tests to make sure there isn't something else going on besides the fracture. Appetite stimulants like Mirtazapine may help him to start eating on his own, or you may have to force-feed him with a syringe and canned cat food. Hope that helps!

I don't find that to be the case at all. Most cats heal very well and quickly after surgery. Ultimately it is up to you on how you wish to proceed but I personally would do the surgery. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello, sorry to hear about Kirara. Yes this could be a sign that she is in pain. Even though cats tolerate pain well, fractures are very painful and she should have pain medications administered. Kirara should likely have some form of opioid for the next couple of days to control her pain. Unfortunately, her signs could also be associated with other underlying conditions and side effects from whatever trauma she suffered. Infections is one thing we worry about when using any form of bandage/splint. If she continues to be lethargic, continues to vomit, and not want to eat then she should be immediately evaluated by her veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
