My cat has a bloody nose and a bump in his nostril. What do I do?

It could be many things, including a bacterial or fungal infection, ringworm, poorly healing wound, cancer, among others. Since there is blood and pus now present, I would recommend that Oliver get checked out by a vet. The vet can look at the wound and see what may have caused it, clean it up so it can heal better, and prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatories.

Nose bleeds, balance issues and a growth on the nose are very worrisome signs that should be examined by your vet ASAP. Infections, systemic illness, neurologic issues, toxicity, something stuck in the nasal cavity, growths, tumors, etc can all be possible causes which would benefit from a complete exam. Your vet may recommend additional tests such as taking a sample of any growths, bloodwork, and looking in the nose itself to try and find the cause.

First of all Purrito is one handsome little guy! The bump on his nose is fairly prominent and also appears to be a bit red/inflamed through the fur. Cats do not often get as many lumps and bumps as dogs do, so when one pops up, we take a bit more notice. Some of the common causes of bumps can include benign or malignant masses, abscesses, granulomas, or in this case, even nasal cavity infections or tumors. The only way to determine the cause of this bump is through further testing, either including a needle aspirate (a needle draws out some cells for microscopic evaluation), x-rays, or even a CT scan or MRI of the head. Even though Purrito does not seem to be bothered by this bump, I still recommend taking him to the vet for further evaluation since bumps do not often go away on their own. Hello, sorry to hear about your cat. It looks like it may have a sinus infection or nasal and sinus infection that's creating an abscess. Common infections in that area are associated with fungal (Cryptococcus neoformans or Aspergillus) or bacterial. Cancer can also cause this in older cats. A sample of his nose, bloodwork, and urine sampling would aid to differentiate between these diseases. Hi Your cat may seem fine, but even so, you should have a veterinarian check it out. There's no way to know what's going on by just seeing or feeling it. It could be an abscess, a mild trauma, or a more serious problem. The vet will preform a fine needle aspiration to take a sample for analysis and diagnosis.

I mostly worry about infection and tumors as the cause of the swelling and bleeding. There is a common fungal infection known as cryptococosis that can cause this, which is treatable, but requires long- term therapy. There are also other fungal and bacterial infections that can cause this. Tumors can also be treated with varying success depending on the type of tumor present. It's important to get Spike to a vet sometime soon to exam her and diagnose the specific problem. These types of diseases are often life-threatening and are more treatable earlier in the course of the disease. I hope that helps and Spike gets better soon.

If she is having persistent sneezing and nasal discharge even after treatment with antibiotics, and you are also seeing a bump of some kind inside her nostril, I would be concerned that she may have a nasal tumor or foreign body of some kind in her nose. If your veterinarian does not have any suggestions for further work-up at this point, I would recommend asking for referral to a specialist for rhinoscopy (looking at the inside of the nasal cavity with a small camera), as well as other testing if needed such as a bacterial or fungal culture, biopsy of the lump, etc. to try and get a diagnosis.
