My cat has blood in his poop, but it's not loose. Should I see a vet?

It is possible that this particular stool was difficult to pass and you helping to remove it may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the rectal tissue. Cats can become constipated, and if she has been passing less stool than usual, straining to defecate and had a decreased appetite I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. There are some other things that can cause blood in the stool as well including intestinal parasites, colitis or even inflammatory bowel disease. If the blood is persistent you should make an appointment to see your veterinarian as well.

Hello, sorry to hear about Rico. I would be most suspicious that he may have inflammatory bowel disease which needs to be diagnosed with an abdominal ultrasound and intestinal biopsies. You can try and change his diet to a novel protein source (rabbit, duck, venison) and see if this helps. The trial should be performed for 4-6 weeks and you must be strict about not feeding him any other kind of food (no treats, table scraps, or other kind of food). If this does not work, you can then add fiber in the form of plain pumpkin for several weeks to see if this changes his stools. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I would monitor Button for now, and keep an eye on her feces. If you see blood again, then yes I would take her into a vet. Her GI tract could have become irritated with the diarrhea, causing the blood in the feces. Should it be a one off occurrence, and she is eating normally with no more diarrhea, she does not require a vet visit.

Unfortunately there is no picture attached to your post, so I can't see what his poop looks like. Cats can easily get stressed, and that can lead to colitis. Colitis is inflammation of the colon, and that can cause blood in the stool. I'd keep an eye on him and his poop for now. If it continues to be bloody, give his vet a call. As for what happened with the vet, I suspect they may have used a cotton swab to get a sample of poop from his anus. I hope this helps!

Thanks for adopting Eli. Blood in the stool without constipation is often due to intestinal parasites. Please take a sample to your veterinarian and they will look under the microscope for parasite eggs. If they find some they will prescribe the correct dewormer for Eli. If there are no parasites and this continues Eli should go in for an exam. He could have an anal infection, rectal polyp or intestinal inflammation causing the blood. Cats do have blood in the stool more often than other animals so if he's normal and this only happens once in a while I would just keep an eye on him, and bring him in if it is a constant issue. Hello. Vomiting and blood in the feaces could be signs of a mild gastritis, or could be much more severe. If the poop was very big and hard, then the vomiting could be secondary to Wally being constipated. If the poop was soft and liquid then he could have a gastritis. If he is eating/drinking well, and just had one episode and is back to normal, you can monitor him for now, but if he is lethargic, still vomiting, and if the blood gets worse or continues, then I would bring him to a vet. If he was straining in any way it can rupture a blood vessel and cause some blood. It also can be a sign of an infection or him having trouble with the diet and he may need a new food. Since he is other wise healthy and acting normal, you can watch him for any vomiting or diarrhea. If the blood continued with diarrhea, then he needs to seen to see what is gong on.
