My cat has blood in his poop but is acting normal. What's going on?

If he is acting completely normal then I would actually recommend monitoring this for now. This could be an isolated incident where there was mild irritation of his intestines. If it repeats itself then most definitely get him checked out. But there is a chance that things will go back to normal on their own.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I suggest you have him dewormed and I would also start him on a probiotic (Fortiflora). If you do those two things and the diarrhea doesn't start to resolve in a few days then you need to take him to a vet for an exam. If you use that again in the future and the diarrhea starts again then you can probably confidently say that it is the issue in which case I would stop using it. Usually if that is the case the diarrhea starts within 24 hours of administration. Two weeks later, it is not likely. The new food is also possibly the culprit but again, you didn't switch cold turkey and it doesn't sound like he is eating that much of it anyway. Again, possible but not likely. Hope this helps. I am very sorry to hear that Ludo is experiencing this issue, I am sure it is unsettling. From what you are describing, diarrhoea which becomes liquid and has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Ludo has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in cats, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed one such episode I would continue to monitor Ludo at home. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and plenty of fresh water. If the episodes continue, if Ludo becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Ludo to see his vet. Blood in the feces can be caused by many different things including diarrhea (can be caused by eating something silly, worms, toxins), can also be caused by rat bait toxin, clotting factor problems, or an abscess. If there is blood dripping from the bum, then I would recommend having Krookie seen by a vet as soon as possible, as some of these conditions can be fatal if not treated right away. Likely it will be something that can be fixed with some medications, however best to get it checked right away. Best of luck with Krookie.

Get a fecal sample and send it away for analysis (worms, protozoa, bacteria, etc.) 2. Abdominal ultrasound 3. Trial with hypoallergenic diet 4. Checking B12 levels 4. GI endoscope and samples Often chronic GI issues in cats can be hard to diagnose the exact cause, as it is often a combination of factors, however start at the top of the list and go down, and see if you can get an answer. Certain liver and pancreatic conditions can cause this, as well as intestinal inflammation. Additional tests I recommend are pancreatic and liver function tests, bloodwork to determine nutrient absorption by the intestines, x-rays, and even an ultrasound. The most aggressive diagnostic would be an exploratory surgery with biopsies. You can talk to your vet also about changing your cat’s diet and adding probiotics. Poor guy. He sounds ill indeed. Many disease processes can cause loose bloody stool including: intestinal parasites, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, lymphoma (cancer of the intestines), dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have), and even a bacterial infection. The first step would be to do a full panel bloodwork analysis, fecal exam and urinalysis done on Oliver. This should be ble to narrow things down quite a bit so that your vet can know what Oliver needs treatment wise. I would suggest scheduling an appt for him soon at your local vet.
