My cat has bleeding cuts at mouth corners and won't eat. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old

My parents cat has little cuts in both corners of mouth. They are bleeding, she can’t open her mouth too far without pain, and she’s been refusing dry biscuits for about a week. The cuts have been there for a while, but the pain associated has only cropped up in the last week. She is a vaccinated indoor cat, and only associates with another indoor vaxed cat. The other cat is perfectly fine, and has no signs of pain eating and no mouth lesions. Any ideas on what she could have?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the pictures you have provided, it appears as though Kohara may be dealing with indolent ulcers of the lip. These are typically triggered by a hypersensitivity from an allergen. Treatment for these typically consist of steroid therapy and antibiotics for secondary infections. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
