My cat's mouth is swollen, but she's eating. Should I worry?

Oh no, poor Raven! Do not give her any human pain medications! Many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. It is concerning that her mouth is swollen, but it's good that she is eating and drinking. I would feed her only canned food for now or soak her dry food with gently warmed low sodium chicken or beef broth to make it soft for her to eat. I would have her checked out by a vet first thing in the morning if her mouth is still swollen, or she stops eating or drinking. If the swelling has gone down overnight, then feed her the canned or softened dry food for a couple of days before switching back to her normal food. I hope this helps!

She could have an eosinophilic granuloma which is common in cats and can be caused by an allergic response. The lesion may become ulcerated and is typically treated with a corticosteroid. If she has any fleas then she should be treated for fleas. You could also put her on a hypoallergenic diet and see if that helps. Try to find a low cost clinic or a vet that would take a payment plan so you can get her treated. If she just needs a corticosteroid then it shouldn't be very expensive. Hope she gets better soon!

Another reason for swollen lips are possible allergic reactions to insect bites or noxious substances. In addition, dental disease or improper teeth occlusion can can cause lip abrasions. My best advice is this: As long as she is eating, drinking, and playing normally, give the lip 3 days to improve and get smaller. I can't tell from the photo if it is swollen. If you think it is, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian because it could indicate the beginning of an infection or tooth root abscess. There's not much you can do in that area because Misty will lick off any topical treatments. She should wear an elizabethan collar at all times so she cannot rub the area. If the lesion is not swollen, you can monitor it for a few days. If the area is not healing or is getting worse, I recommend to have Misty examined by the veterinarian. These can be caused by a primary infection, contact irritation, insect bite, or an immune mediated condition. This could be the beginning of a condition also known as "rodent ulcer", it's basically an autoimmune reaction and it is not surprising if it starts to occur around pregnancy time. at the moment as long as it doesn't bother her and it doesn't become much larger, i would recommend just monitoring it, as treatment for this condition usually involve steroids which you can't give to a lactating mother.
