My cat bites when touched on her back. Is it pain or arthritis?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 2 months old | 16 lbs

When anyone touches her on the back behind her front legs she bites her front legs she is eating going to the bathroom drinking water she does even play no one can even pet her back the sides are okay but not her back. Started 2 month ago. Do you think it is arthritis or is it something else that I should be really worried about.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach!

Most cats do not like to be touched past the head normally. But of this is a sudden behavioral change I would recommend a Vet exam since she is getting older. They can see of she is more painful than normal in her back and be sure she hasn't lost weight. There are glucosamines/chondriotins for cats like Dasuquin and Cosequin. In the mean time don't pet her where she doesn't like. Cats do get ramped up if we keep doing things they don't like.
